Never modded before, where do I start?

Alright so as the title says, I've never modded before. Recently started watching mod videos and a few forums. Where do I start a lot of these mods require other scripts. Are they safe (malware, virus), does having multiple scripts lead to in game issues and finally how do I find all these and ensure they are in the correct locations within the game data?
