Help with editing traffic

  • I wan't to make my own traffic options that fit more with my "country reality". Change densitys, maybe change wich cars spawn where, but principally change the traffic density by time. The thing is,from 23:00 to 05:00,the streets and principally the highways should be empty, but actually I think that at 12:00 has less cars than in that specific time! So I just want to know what file I edit to edit traffic and also if it's possible to change traffic density by time.

  • The traffic density would be really good to be fixed.

  • Hi,
to edit traffic there are mostly 3 Files to edit:
gameconfig.xml (for overall density and amount of cars/traffic and peds)
popcycle.dat (for density/amount and type of traffic in specific areas and different times)
popgroups.ymt (for the groups of traffic/peds as requested within the popcycle dat)

So if you want to overall and all the time have less traffic, have a look at "Gameconfig.xml" there are population settings and things like "VehicleUpperLimit" and "VehicleAmbientDensityMultiplier" lower these and you'll have less cars/traffic driving around overall.
If you don't want to edit the gameconfig (or just edit certain areas) go to "popcycle.dat"
You'll find that there are groups of Game Areas (like Alta, Vinewood, Downtown, Freeway etc)
The Popcycle has 12 Values per Region. Each value represents 2 Ingame Hours.
    Example:
    Value #1 (Hour 00-02am)
    Value#2 (Hour 02-04am)
    Value#3 (Hour 04-06am)
    And so on.
Here you also have the option for "Max Cars" "Max Peds" and you can lower these.
After the Values in Numbers you find references to Popgroups.
For example you'll see that in Vinewood there are "VEH_RICH" which are the rich people cars. Or for the Countryside it's more of the "VEH_POOR" and "VEH_COUNTRYSIDEONROAD"
These amount are in percentage of the Max Amount specified.
So let say (as example) Downtown has exactly 100 Cars to Spawn. Then the Popgroups would define the percentage of possible Cars. So if it would say VEH_RICH 40 VEH_MID 50 VEH_POOR 10 this would mean 40% of the 100 Cars in Downtown are Rich, 50% are Middle Class and 10 are Poor.
Which Cars belong to these groups is defined in the "popgroups.ymt"

So depeding on what you want you have a few option.
If you want overall less traffic all the time and everywhere, just lower the values in "Gameconfig.xml"
If you want to adjust the traffic amounts already defined in "Gameconfig.xml" (or just want to lower it in certain areas at certain times) edit the Popcycle.dat.
Both Files can be edited with a simple text editor.

If you want it even more advanced, you can even go as far as to edit the popgroups.
For that you'll need to find a vanilla "popgroups.ymt" from the internet because strangely OPENIV can't open the file that comes with the game installation. (I myself have a popgroups.ymt I downloaded somewhere, but I have it heavily edited, so it would most likely crash if not used in my Game settings)

I hope these infos help you.
    -Sabrina

  • @Sabrina2001 Thanks

  • @lucasjuhas Good luck, you will need it. I have been fighting this same battle for over a year. There is a LOT more to it than just edits to popcycle. As a matter of fact, I could swear any edits to popcycle are ignored. I have come to understand that it is more about the right combination of edits between popcycle and gameconfig. In particular vehicle spacing, in game config, along with other values. The issue is, is that not of these parameters are remotely intuitive, so it's always a guessing game.

  • And there's also one more thing to note
You can up your traffic density in settings.xml (However you would need to edit the spacing in Gameconfig to avoid Weird stuff)
    Settings.xml is in Your documents/Rockstargames/GTA V

To a cartain degree (and if in the right combination with the Gameconfig) I do get the feeling that the Popcycle edits do appear in the Game. Especially since I made quite a few custom popgroups so I can have addon cars in regular traffic. I had to do a lot of editing in the Popcycle to have the countryside with almost no traffic and still have full streets in the city..

But if you want to go advance and even further and change values with Vehicle Spacing then the Gameconfig and popcycle files alone won't be enough!! I learned that "accidentally" xD

  • And I have to agree with @eshenk !
The more advanced (and customized) you want your traffic, the more work and values you have to edit.
Simply said. If you want overall less traffic, just go with half of the vanilla vehicle limit / ambient vehicle density (or something that suits you)
If you want it at different times you have to go one step further and consult the Popcycle.
If you want to go even further, you have to adjust and balance alot of values that affect traffic in multiple files.

A little tip on the Popcycle. I'm not sure if it really matters or if it is just a placebo effect. But when I edit my popcycle.dat, I replace it in the update.rpf and the common.rpf
