STEAM USER, you're in luck!

  • MODERATOR

    Seriously, you are. :)

I had the good fortune to make a backup of my entire GTA V install, a few days prior to the shit hitting the fan.

So, the part where your luck comes in, is that you can just restore your entire GTA V folder, without having to put STEAM in Offline mode. The reason this works, is because STEAM only looks at the pertinent appmanifest file (in the parent directory of GTA V). Once that reports that you have the latest update, STEAM won't look any further (unless you were to do a manual verify of your games files).

Just did all this myself (once again), and works like a charm. :)

P.S. This isn't hot & new info per se; but with recent shit going on, I figured this small PSA might be of use to others too.

  • I had to update my game cause rockstar couldnt log in. So now i cant play gta until scripthook update. Can i downgrade the game or something? I bought via steam too.

  • You should have had a backup before the new update dude

No way to downgrade, unless you have a backup.

For future reference, I think you made the mistake of keeping STEAM in Offline mode. That will only buy you a few days. Next time, just let it update, and then simply restore from backup. Like I said "STEAM only looks at the pertinent appmanifest file (in the parent directory of GTA V)". So, once you restored, game won't try to update again.

  • @meimeiriver There is no "next time", GTA 5 has had the most hardcore update placed on it. It's so hardcore of an update, it totally killed modding. New file type extensions for the models (yft to YVN from what I remember.)

  • @krashadam
I read that too but the author of the post was not sure. And you? Are you?
Really hope that's not the case because I feel so dumb now. I have a Steam game, want to do the backup before the update but too late. I had to do the update with no backup... So so disappointed...

  • @FryTHF Apparently it still is possible to mod, though I read closer at it and it seems complicated than the old way. I wouldn't know thought, haven't modded GTA 5 in forever because of some shit mod.

  • Nice, does this work everytime? I updated my steam copy but I still have a backup of the last update before all this nonsense. Once you do this everything works normally as if its updated?

  • Yes delete the new GTAV folder and copy your backup to the steam directory.
It will load your old backup with no problems
