VirusTotal implementation and multiple file upload functionality

  • ADMIN

We've rolled out a couple of major changes to 5Mods today that I wanted to make sure you are all aware of.

First of all, we have implemented automated VirusTotal scanning of all new files on the site. This means that when you upload your files to 5Mods it is automatically sent to VirusTotal to be scanned by over 50 of the most popular and effective anti-virus programs on the market today. All users of the site will be provided with a link on your file pages to the VirusTotal report of the files you upload for their own peace of mind.

If your file is reported as malicious by 4 or more anti-virus programs then it will be automatically flagged to the moderation team for additional testing and will not be available for download until the team can make a decision on your file.

Files using external hosts (e.g. large files) will not be scanned by VirusTotal and users download these at their own risk.

We are currently in the process of scanning every file uploaded to 5Mods in the past and over the next week this data will also be populated so that every single file uploaded to 5Mods, old and new, will have a VirusTotal report attached to it.

The second major change we've made is to allow multiple file uploads to a single mod page. This will open up a few new options to mod authors with their files, including the ability to maintain a "back catalogue" of previous versions of your mod as well as offering different variations of your mod on the same page, when before mod authors would have had to make an entirely new mod page so they could upload a slightly different file.

In order to fit in this new functionality, which you'll find below the ad area on the left nav where the description used to be, we've had to do some shuffling around with the file page design. This has involved moving the description area to the main content area of the screen. Arguably, it's my personal opinion that the description of a mod is very important -- what it does, how to install it, known issues and so on are extremely important bits of information to users of your mods. Most definitely as important as the screenshots of your mod working. As such, the description should be front and centre on a mod page instead of relegated to the sidebar.

We've designed the description area so that it will display up to 350 pixels in height (which is about 15 lines on desktop browsers). If your description is longer than that a link with "Show full description" will show that users can click to expand the area to its full height. I think this is a good compromise so that the comments section doesn't get thrown too far down the page without a user choosing to do so.

I am happy to listen to reasonable feedback on these design changes, taking into account the new multiple file functionality needs to fit in somewhere where it's relatively obvious.

This marks the end of the major changes we're going to be making to the 5Mods site for at least the next couple of months. We'll be around to fix any bugs in the new code we've added to the site and to keep things up and maintained, but our coders are needed elsewhere right now as we ramp up to releasing our new site design on Nexus Mods.

  • @Dark0ne Looks great! Also sorry didn't see this thread :)

    @Dark0ne

I might have a bug to report. I approved a new mod moments ago from a trusted uploader. The mod shows as approved but did not show up on the front page listed as "latest files."

    Here is the mod: https://www.gta5-mods.com/vehicles/volvo-v60-polestar-add-on-remplace

  • ADMIN

    I'll take a look now, @DarthPungz

  • MODERATOR

@DarthPungz That's why I didn't approve any yet, I prefer to wait until our Admins tell us it's safe to approve/reject/unpublish them.

  • MODERATOR

    @Reyser

I wanted to see if the site was functional and work out if there was a bug or not... Sorry if I made more work for you @Dark0ne

  • MODERATOR

@DarthPungz No problem at all. Reporting such problems will help admins to solve them asap, it's a great move :)

  • ADMIN

@DarthPungz I can see the issue. It's not actually a "bug" as we haven't changed this part of the code at all.

Essentially, the author uploaded the file 22 hours ago, but it was only approved in the past 2 hours. So it's showing in the "Latest files" below any files uploaded more recently, which unfortunately means it's not on the front page as there's been more than 8 new files uploaded more recently than that.

We haven't touched this code so I think this is how it worked with Rappo before we came along, unless someone wants to tell me differently?

  • @Dark0ne Yes, that's how it's worked before. Personally I think it would make more sense if the more recently approved mods/updates are pushed to the front, rather than the most recently uploaded.

    [reports] some reports
    ..................................................................
    ● New Mods List Up Timing.
    ex.
    (1) when i got 'Notifications Icon' about New Mods.

(2-1) click icon > click list > new mod page > no problem
(2-2) but i can't see that new mod on List.
i don't remember how long. maybe few seconds.
    ..................................................................

    (1) show / 'My Uploads' menu > can see removed mod on list. with 'Unpublished' badge.
    (2) hide / 'My Profiles' menu > See All > can't see removed mod on list.
    (3) show / search '718' > can see that mod on list, without badge.
    (4) hide / can't see that mod on normal list.
    (5) hide / can't see that mod on 'Handling' Tag list.

    I concur.

  • @Dark0ne

Any chance of being able to add more tags when updating a file for example adding tunning or add-on ?
If it's not to much to add i think it would be a good idea especially for helping moderators out for when i file is updated.

other than that i like the new changes keep up the good work :)

  • @Bob322 you can already add tags. To your uploads. They are moderated and checked by moderators before approval

  • @FoxtrotDelta

I know that you can add them when you first upload the file but how do you add more when updating it in the future

for example my bobcat dually has car, truck, vanilla edit

when i go to update it with a add-on how do i add more tags?

  • @Bob322 you simply use report function and moderator will add them for you. i thought when updating a file that option was there. let me do a quick test.

  • @Bob322 i can add tags .but may it's because im a moderator. in the mean while you can use report feature and we shall add those tags for you.

  • @FoxtrotDelta

ok thanks i will do that for now :)
