[Tutorial] Grand Theft Auto V Modding - A Few Things You Should Know
-
@polarguy What did you mean by "extract the files"? You have to explain a bit more about what you did.
-
Just creating a folder and renaming it to "mods" is not enough. You need to place the RPF files you modded inside the mods folder. Here are few examples.
I dont get this part. Can someone explain? Thanks.
-
@erisheme1 If you modify anything inside any rpf in any way, it should go into the mods folder.
For an example, let's say you have to modify the vehicles.meta.
First you have to copy the update.rpf from the Update folder. Put it in mods\update.
Now you should have two update.rpfs, one in Grand Theft Auto V\mods\update and the other in Grand Theft Auto V\update.Put the modified vehicles.meta into the update.rpf inside the mods folder. The directory should look like mods\update\update.rpf\common\data\levels\gta5.
The unmodified update.rpf inside the Grand Theft Auto V\update shouldn't be modded in any way.
The same thing should be done if you install any add-on or replace vehicle.

@V4D3R Ahhh! Gotcha. Thanks for the help
. ill probably have a few more questions later on since im new to this. Trying to take it slow right now and do everything properly.
-
Hmm. how come when i drag and drop a car add on folder into dlc packs it drops in the rpf file instead of the whole folder?
-
@erisheme1 It's an annoying bug in OpenIV. To add the folder into dlcpacks, I always do it through Windows Explorer.
If you want to do it in OpenIV though, you will need to make the folder by hand.
Browse to the dlcpacks folder and in the right window, where you can see the existing dlcpack folders, do Right-Click > New > Folder, give the folder the correct name, then go into that folder and drop the addon into it.
-
@LeeC2202 ahh, thank you sir. sadly my game crashed during load. any tips? i only have 1 add on installed. it crashed after adding the second one.
-
@erisheme1 Try a custom gameconfig, https://www.gta5-mods.com/misc/gameconfig-for-1-0944 or this https://www.gta5-mods.com/misc/gta-5-gameconfig-300-cars
-
@LeeC2202 thing is i have a gameconfig to fix the crash issues for redux
-
@erisheme1 The only other thing I can think of then is that there is a fault with your second addon. The easy way to test that is to remove the folder for the first one and see if the game loads.
If it doesn't, then the addon might be faulty, check the dlclist.xml for typos. If it does load, then I suspect the gameconfig is what you require. Other than manually trying to edit the gameconfig, I'm not sure what other options you have.
-
@erisheme1 your problem is the redux mod. Redux is a crap mod all the author did was combine multiple mods from here on gta5 and pass them off as his own. Delete redux and start with a new fresh mods folder. You will have increased fps and no more compatibility issues with script mods or adding addon car packs. Redux does not work well with other mods or addon car packs and it gets more problems and worse with every new gta update.
-
Yeah i actually went ahead and tried that. the game loaded fine with the first add on removed and the second one installed. Tho when i tried to spawn the vehicle it said invalid model.
-
@Willief23 Fuck....Guess i have no choice. the graphics look great tho
oh well. ill give it a shot
-
@erisheme1 If you're going to try without Redux, don't delete it all, just rename the mods folder, create a new one and try in that.
-
@LeeC2202 kk, ill give it a try.
-

@V4D3R nice tutorial.
-
@V4D3R how do i copy and paste in open iv
how to get the Mods folder working
Just creating a folder and renaming it to "mods" is not enough. You need to place the RPF files you modded inside the mods folder. Here are few examples.
Original Path Path in mods folder
GTAV\update\update.rpf mods\update\update.rpf
GTAV\common.rpf mods\common.rpf
GTAV\update\x64\dlcpacks\mpbiker\dlc.rpf mods\update\x64\dlcpacks\mpbiker\dlc.rpf
GTAV\x64e.rpf mods\x64e.rpf

New to GTA modding, Slightly confused when creating the mods folder it starts off with nothing in it, so what do I copy over there, the whole of GTA V ? or certain files from GTA V, want to play online with friends but also want to mod the single player. Normally good with these kind of things but I think the wording has confused me.
-
@V4D3R where does .ini go?
-
@gtaenthusiast What .ini? It depends on what mod you are trying to install.
