How do I link a page when you hit download to install mod on different page?
-
@Dark0ne is the owner, you know. Regarding external links, @rappo also sort of held the same approach for larger files, so I don't see what you're whining about. Redirecting to linkers like AdFly or other forced monetization options will only drive people away. If you need money for your mods, your Patreon thing should work out nicely for that format. Shame you're leaving, as it looks like you bunch make the models yourself.
As for people on YouTube using your content without you getting some kind of kickback, the whole mess around ownership is vague right now. You could try contacting or DMCAing them, but there's go guarantee here. That said, offering the mods will always result in somebody just ripping them off and uploading them for free somewhere else. Not much you, or anybody can do.
GTAInside also isn't paying you afaik, so idk what you want to get out of it there.
Personally, I think getting some form of monetary kickback would be nice, if it's not at the expense of the users, other modders or some kind of tiered system where people are made to believe they deserve more support than others. It's hard to realize however and I'm already glad for the occasional small donation. Making people go out of their way to be redirected to several pages of "Click ad to continue" is not the way to go however.

Now this site will be dying in next months... Because lots of modders will leave... What have you done DarkOne ? Cant you just appreciate their work and be normal?
I think its not that hard to work together as a team.
-
And also i dont think it should be bad to put redirect links...
-
ITS CLEAR ENOUGH FROM ALL WHO HAVE REPLIED, WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE...
That's not clear at all. Have you read all the other replies to this thread? Several have replied in this very thread saying the exact opposite of what you're saying -- that they don't want the download buttons to redirect to another service and would rather keep downloads on 5Mods and only on 5Mods. The same is being said on the 5Mods Discord servers by the mod authors on there.
For a tally in this thread alone; Unknown Modder, SkylineGTRFreak, Cyron43 and ikt have all come out and said that they don't like the idea of the change to the rules that you are suggesting on third party content.
Don't ignore them to fit your agenda, please.

I really don't see why asking people for their opinion on this subject before I make a decision, which is exactly what I've done, is being disrespectful to mod authors or not "normal". I'd even argue it shows a lot of respect by asking for actual opinions from mod authors before I make my decision, which seems to have been entirely ignored for some reason.
-
You still dont understand the point... The main point is that the good modders will leave... Nobody is talking about rules now.

Sorry, is SkylineGTRFreak a bad modder? Are the others who've come out and said they don't agree with this change? There are a lot of mod authors on 5Mods, Nexus Mods, ModDB, GameBanana and in the modding community in general that do it as a hobby, for fun. Those guys aren't going anywhere.
If the main driver for some mod authors is to want to make more money off mods (outside of the donations and Patreon options already offered), and these mod authors want to leave because they think they'll make more money elsewhere then that's fine. They can leave if they so wish as nothing is forcing them to stay here. I'm pretty sure they aren't going to make any more money by using GTAInside, however, and should likely look in to hosting the mods themselves on their own sites.
The rules are exactly what we're talking about here. A discussion was started in this thread asking if download buttons on file pages could be changed to allow mod authors to link to remote hosts which is not normal for 5Mods outside of large file downloads or specific mods that link to GitHub pages or personal websites (e.g. ScriptHook). Up to now, that's all it's been, a discussion.
Somehow we went from a discussion on the topic to full-blown nuclear meltdown before a decision has even been made. I find this a bit perplexing really.
PS. I am removing your strawpoll links, Matisek, as they are not what I'm looking for and easy to cheat/game to make the figures look bigger than then really are. What I'm looking for is balanced and open discussion on the topic. Unfortunately, that's all gone down-hill because the discussion has basically turned into threats of "do what I say, or I'll leave". In 16 years of running Nexus Mods I've never really responded well to that sort of mentality when we're trying to have a good discussion about a subject.

you gave the modders a choice to speak - what did you expect? they would continue to line your pockets without rewarding themselves? the scene is changing..
-
And thank you to all those modders who provided their opinions on the matter. I'd love to hear from more mod authors as well
-
we know how much your site is worth
modders will change that

burp
Thank you for your invaluable input.
That's stupid. Honestly, if you're going to resort to posting such ludicrous links and claim they're relevant then I think your time in this conversation is at an end. How is a site that they estimate makes 93,000 Euros a year worth 2,700,000 Euros? That's 29x yearly revenue, which isn't even profit or EBIT. lol.

93,000 a year is more than what we getting..... sharemods.com is now my host. BTW why did you not delete my acc as requested?>
I sent you a PM asking you to confirm the deletion. You haven't responded.

Well cya in the future Tone

Since tone asked for his account to be deleted, this topic now reads a little bit odd as his posts were deleted when his username was deleted on the forums.
I'll keep all the posts here for transparency and as a record of what I've said in response but, be aware, without context, it won't read the same.

@Matisek
Do not pretend other modders share your opinion.

I don't like external links, it is a security and site credibility danger...
I don't dislike modders who make money but I do think that this platform should be for free mods... If someone wants to have a patreon link in their profile or make a thread from time to time showcasing or advertising their service I am cool with that.... but I mean like once a month or something.... not posts every hour, day, or week...
-
This thread went way out of context, what i actually ment about "ignored" in my last post was... the great content gets burried under the low quality releases on the site, and the only way to fix that if you are not ready to filter all of it and clean it up is to introduce a Rank system that is able to support and promote the great and premium work by tagging them with some sort of banner or other thing... cause like we said, alot of hours go into those works, and all we want is a small support!
We are not asking you to share your part of the 93.000 € with us @Dark0ne ! We are not asking you to fill our pockets with Gold or "thousands of dollars" like @FoxtrotDelta mentionned before. We are not asking to introduce a "PAY IT OR LEAVE" button. All we want is YOU to allow and support us to use external links so we can get a little something to pay at least licensing of our Softwares and future content for you again to enjoy!Patreon isn't the goldmine everyone think it is! Most of us don't even have 1 Patron over there! And Donations... Please!!! Not even one 1 Donation in 2 years! People do not want to pay money for something they can get for free. And we are not asking them to pay for it... not all all! All they have to do is click on 2 links and they have theyr FREE mod! Sharemods works with a rewarding system, the more downloads you have, the more you are rewarded with points,... you can read it by yourself if you want. Incorporate this system to your page and we modders will be happy and so will you!
Me personally am not that impulsive, and i'm not going to Delete my account right away. Cause i still believe there is a way to bring all this to a point everyone could be satisfied. But i for sure will stop Uploading to this site as well for now and seww where you will lead all of this!
It's not much we are asking.
And sorry if my words are not well chosen, my English is not my Native language!
Cheers.

I agree that the content should be filtered better, though discriminating between more experienced modders and new modders would probably make them overshadow smaller modders. I myself would like to see a lower bar for mods, or at least have some standards. This would be automatically taken care of with a better sorting system, much like over on NexusMods, but then you risk new mods getting less exposure (I always catch myself just downloading Skyrim mods with lots of downloads or endorsements...)

This is something between you and your users, or you and Oleg. Get a Patreon rolling or explicitly ask for donations to support your tools. Scripters only need Visual Studio for example. In any case, external linkage is a bad idea for the user experience on this website, especially if they just link to paywalled shit or ad-riddled pages. It also adds a new factor to mod stealing, since it's more lucrative. See the LSFD drama.
Patreon isn't the goldmine everyone think it is! Most of us don't even have 1 Patron over there! And Donations... Please!!! Not even one 1 Donation in 2 years! Sharemods? Please, no. I'm getting full-screen ad-aids already, with loud background sound playing, other screens to click through and misleading download buttons.
I agree some kind of kickback system would be nice, but modding should still just be a nice pastime. Money shouldn't play a role in modding games, because it can go to shit in the blink of an eye, especially shit like paid mods.
-
first of all we want sharemods external link because the site need modders and modders need money for licenses / models/ sometimes kits for updates etc (talking about the ones making vehicles mods) otherwise modders will stop release their stuff for free and i know a lot of them stopped doing it for free and the were high skilled modders
-
@Asyr0n mmmmmmh, dunno. It's always different, but people were willing to donate for my mods. Sure, some were because I have helped them with something or so, but so far, I haven't made any vehicle for donation deal or something. Without giving exact details, let me tell you: Just taking 4 months of this years, I have made around 300$ just in donations. Not for any specific vehicle, but for my work as a whole. This money was then put forward towards the Cadillac Beast which I am currently working on for example, or FSX models I can convert. I see many people asking for donations because of all the costs, blablabla and then see the very same people use cracked software and models from other people. I don't want to generalize, but these people do exist. Let's face it, what are the costs a vehicle modder has (Not factoring in time, because people have different stances on that one). You need ZModeler 3, which costs, let's say 50$ a year (depending what license type you choose), apart from that all other programs which are necessary can be downloaded for free. Things like 3DSMax, Photoshop are not mandatory at all. I'd rather see donations in forms of models in that case, at least people know where the money went into.
I even find the use of Patreon questionable (The way some people use it). Idk, if anything I expect money to come out of my YouTube channel and even that isn't a lot. Still, I do modding mainly because I have fun doing it and I will always stand by that. Same reason why I can't get my head around private mods, but I know that people have different opinions and I respect this. I just don't want to waste all the time just so I can play with a mod for an hour and then keep it forever alone on my harddrive.
I don't want to stop anyone from uploading their work on sites with more revenue, BUT I don't see the point in having 5-mods link to it then. What's the point? That's like uploading a YouTube video which merely displays a link where you can download the real video, just so you get more money. This concept somehow doesn't really... well... get into my head. Either upload those mods on both sites or just the one which you think gives you more ad revenue or whatever.Do I like to get money for modding? Yes, yes I do. But would I consider stopping if I don't get money? Nope, probably not.
-
@Dark0ne After skimming through the comments here I can't deny I get the feeling that certain modders want this as an additional income. When Matisek (who made him the speaker of all modders anyway?) claims all good modders will leave then this is an insult to everyone who just enjoys sharing his work with the community for free.
Another aspect is when greed takes over. We all know what happens on YouTube. Certain people mass produce with lower and lower quality, they steal other people's work for their own profit and whatnot. I certainly don't want to see this happening here.
So if those "good" modders leave for profit then let 'em have it. 5Mods will NOT die because greedy people leave. 5Mods will die if you keep them because of the aforementioned reasons.
-
@Faysal Whom are you talking about when you say "we"? Has there been a modder conference which I wasn't invited for? Yes that was sarcasm. I want to point out that you can't speak for all modders.
