How do I link a page when you hit download to install mod on different page?

  • @ikt never heard about adblocker?

    @Gta5KoRn
We're talking about people finding ways to support their modding here financially, using an ad blocker en masse would just kill the platform. Or do you think sharelinks has a money tree farm?

Same with any other platform on the web. I personally whitelist communities and websites I visit often and don't have obnoxious ads. The occasional clickbait news website can go fuck itself though.

  • Lets be honest, if I really wanted to get mad dosh with my mods I wouldn't be using external sites (5mods) to host my content, I'd set up my own website and hosting, a la GTA X Scripting.

I wouldn't hop into another site and try to change how it works so I can get more money.

I'm completely against the idea of putting adsites as intermediaries to downloads. Anything that bothers the player just so I can get money is not right. The plan is to get paid because they enjoy my content, not use them as a clickfarm.

  • I am more worried about the current low quality content increase being added to the same sections as high quality models, then about getting a few dollars. Currently every car, no matter how good, disappear after a week never to be seen again. Even quicker from the first page.

Also, the featured section could use a overhaul, or perhaps make a real mod review section with a proper rating on different aspects and own made screenshots by the reviewer, because currently pretty bad mods get featured sometimes for no reason at all.

I would love an new section for high quality mods, which the mods picks from the normal uploads, but only select mods which are HQ (inside and out) and suitable for full ingame use (meaning LODs, proper textures and normal mapping, working dials and breakable glass etc.).

Currently uploaders are free to choose what information they provide with a car, but as an downloader I would love to have at least a few required fields such as number of LODs (1-5), Breakable glass, working dials, template for livery, model source (GTA SA in not a valid source), etc.

I'm liking all of the above ideas! As a frequent user :) And always willing to give feedback and screenshots.

After thinking this through thoroughly, taking on feedback from this thread and also from all the chat on the 5Mods Discord server over the past days in regards to this issue I have decided to maintain Rappo's rules in regards to external links using the main download button on the 5Mods file page. This means that, unless the file is too large to be uploaded to 5Mods or there are very specific reasons why the download button should link elsewhere (e.g. the download button for Script Hook points to the Script Hook website), we expect all mods to be uploaded to 5Mods rather than redirected to an external service. I want to reaffirm that this has always been 5Mods policy and I personally spoke to Rappo about this on Tuesday where he confirmed he never allowed external links to sites like ShareMods, nor would he have.

While I understand and appreciate the work that goes into making mods, if you feel you want to or should be making more money from your mods past what the donation and Patreon buttons already allow for, then 5Mods is probably not for you. I would like to maintain Rappo's vision of 5Mods being a place where users come to download mods, from 5Mods, for free and without additional hassle or expense. If you disagree with this vision then, rather than trying to change a core fundamental principle of this site, I ask that you please remain civil and make your choice on whether you want to continue using this site, as it always has been, or not.

On a personal note, I've decided to start donating to mod authors who, each month, are the most active and popular mod authors on 5Mods based on our internal database statistics. I know that Rappo used to donate to mod authors from time to time, but I'd like to make this a regular occurrence. I have already done the donations for this month and, from now on, I will do this around the start of each month moving forward.

Quite interestingly, exactly half of the 40 most active and popular authors this month do not ask for or even link donation methods on their profile.

Regardless, thank you for your understanding.

    Keeping it classy :thumbsup_tone2:

  • I was kinda expecting this, and oddly I'm not even mad... disappointed, a little.
But I could see that you do your best to keep the page according to Rappo's "Vision" and i respekt that, in spite of that I think we All would like to know what you, @Dark0ne , consider doin concernig the points @tk0wnz and others mentionned in this thread!!
I hope you will take all these advices into consideration and make this site a better place for everyone.

    Much Love .

I'm just getting caught up on this now, and was actually going to suggest exactly this. It might be nice to have a more formal revenue sharing program, similar to how YouTube shares with creators, but I know that comes with a whole host of technical and community management challenges, so your current approach is a great alternative.

I think a lot of the resent around money in the GTA V modding community comes from a feeling of being left out or taken advantage of. Yes, some devs are just greedy people looking to make a quick buck (cough cough LSRD), but let us not immediately dismiss everyone who is interested in receiving some form of compensation as fitting that mold. Modders often feel like they aren't getting compensated proportionally to the time they put in vs. other people making money from their mods. YouTubers and modding communities/download sites make at least an order of magnitude more money than modders do. Not to trivialize the real time and effort those groups put into maintaining their channels; developing, hosting, and managing sites like this; etc... but at the end of the day, without modders putting in hundreds of hours of effort to actually make the mods themselves, the rest of it couldn't exist. And in my experience, the vast majority of those profiting off the backs of mods are quite stingy. Several YouTubers I've spoken with have been quite offended by the mere suggestion that they contribute something back to the modders who make their channels possible. (To give credit where due, a few have actually been quite generous, but that's the exception not the norm.) I think your idea to donate to modders on a regular basis helps address some of that inequality. I wish YouTubers would do the same.

For me personally, I do provide early access during the beta development period of my mods in exchange for modest donations. I don't do work for hire, and I don't do private mods – once they're up to my standards and are sufficiently stable for the average noob to install and use without issues, my mods are released to everyone. But the key thing is, I would be making these mods even if nobody wanted to pay, because I make them for my own enjoyment too. At a high level, I only make things I want in the game for myself. I'll add features that other people request, but I'm not going to make a mod that's completely uninteresting to me. I wouldn't expect 5-mods however to let me use it as an advertising platform for that! IMO, once you put something on 5-mods, that should mean you're ready for the masses to use it, for free.

I have thought a great deal about putting commercial use restrictions on my future mods – stipulating that any YouTuber or other person who wants to use it for commercial recording/broadcast must get my permission and arrange some sort of deal first. This of course relies on either the honesty of YouTubers to comply with that license, or YouTube's willingness to take down videos reported for using unlicensed mods. But, it also gets tricky if the mod itself uses unoriginal IP. Obviously this is much easier for script mods than for vehicle mods, especially as script mods tend to be "original creations" to a much greater degree, and are less encumbered by potential trademark/copyright issues.

I think it's very important to keep mods free and accessible for people who just want to play with them for their own fun. But it's quite true that there are a lot of folks out there who are profiting handsomely off the labor of modders and giving nothing in return, and I know how frustrating that can be.
