[MAPPING] Using hills/landscape as objects to place?

  • anyone tried using the gta V hills/mountains and landscape as objects for any mapeditor?

    https://i.ytimg.com/vi/euvHVV0MtXs/maxresdefault.jpg

i tried using codewalkers mapviewer and checked the filename of the mountains/hills and landscape i want to use like here: http://i.imgur.com/SXT901O.jpg

i noted the names and wrote them into the .txt file of the mapeditor (not sure if it was menyoo or another map editor, it was somewhere last year when i tried it) but it did not spawn because it says that the file was not found which is strange, maybe the landscape/hills/mountains have to be converted to objects or something??

    @shephart they're not objects

  • @Reacon what are they?

  • MODERATOR

    @shephart terrain

  • @shephart provide me a screenshot of how you wrote them in, you might've written them wrong.

  • @krashadam will do, have to reinstall everything again and give it another try
    have you success with it?

  • @shephart no, Menyoo doesn't even work.

I don't want to use map editor because it fucks up BADLY when it comes to loading maps but sadly I have to if I want to make any maps, so... I'm fucked, there.

  • MODERATOR

@shephart You may want to have a look at: Custom Props Add-On

CAVEAT: Custom Props Add-On is rather old (obsolete, tbh). It contains misconfigured ytyp entries (at the time, ymap wasn't available yet). As the author wrote on their page:

Shaezbreizh Author @meimeiriver yeah yeah i'll do a major update for this mod soon, but will not be usable in ymap ( due to skinn modifier cause of the fact they were made on zmodler before Gims was released)

So, no need to blame the authors. Just so you know you can't just add this addon props mod in a useful manner any more. But, tl;dr, it contains various hills and terrain structures, for your examination. :)

    no, Menyoo doesn't even work.

And that's why I said I usually wait like week or so after the initial update of these trainers, before upgrading my own install myself. :) After a week or so, truly stable versions tend to be released.

  • @meimeiriver Yeah I just picked up the new Menyoo version and it works like a breeze. And I'm well aware of the custom props add-on which if anything is quite useful despite being obsolete, it will help me a ton in map editing.

Yeah, Custom Props Add-On is only 'obsolete' in the sense that it can't be used any more as a (ymap) addon props mod for ppl who want to just 'plug & play'.

And not all objects in it won't show up in a ymap, btw (if you're willing to repair the ytyp entries for them). Custom Props Add-On is also where I got my infamous 'invisi-prop' from, so it can still be used for good, for many purposes. :)

  • @shephart yes you can use these object, but they've no embeded colision and some loading requirment ( object are valid only if you're in their region)
here is an exemple of map editor map using terrain object that i made before learning modeling https://www.gta5-mods.com/maps/lost-santos-chiliad-island ( not that much just beach)
but since they don't have colision it's hard to use them, so you gonna need to learn how to convert prop with gims ( join 5mods map discord for more help about this)

about the picture you show, it's a underwater ( uw) terrain object, so they're not really hd ( lower poly and smaller texture res) and don't have colision embeded too

@Reacon you're wrong, a terrain is an object

@krashadam map editor is loading pretty fine, sure that isn't that fast than ymap ( spawn via script oblige ) but it's still a really usefull tool to create map since we can now turn xml to ymap
so pls stop talking dirt about map editor, you don't like that your right, but don't disgust other people of it while there is no reason

    @
about our custom prop mod, due to the period i started it, only zmodler was allowing us to work on prop, so well i've made a lot of prop with it, unfortunately due to skinned mesh and wrong ytyp ( there were only bad tool to build it at this period) but i never updated it with them.

However, i'm still working on the mod but with gims this time, it take way longer than on zmodeler, there will be less object, but the quality is highly increased ( no more glowing object, LoD , hd blend for terrain, proper colision, proper ytyp etc etc), so pls just wait a bit ;P

  • @Shaezbreizh nice, thank you i give it another try soon, im figuring out now how to port fivem maps as addon

also, your island reminds me of the movie cast away with the plane crash for some reason :D

  • @Shaezbreizh said in [MAPPING] Using hills/landscape as objects to place?:

so pls stop talking dirt about map editor, you don't like that your right, but don't disgust other people of it while there is no reason

Uh... FYI I wasn't talking shit about Map Editor, I was just stating a problem that I recall having with Map Editor and why I didn't want to use it again. (Menyoo got updated anyway so to me using Map Editor wasn't needed.)

I never said other people shouldn't use it, people can use it if they want. This'd be like me talking about Watch_Dogs having stupid mission structures, making the game's missions impossible to complete (this is true, and lots of people who play Watch_Dogs do say this but they still think it's a great game, which it is.)

I actually finished the whole game. While it forced me to play in a way that I didn't want to (I had to kill innocent security guards and the game pretty much awarded me points for killing people who work for corrupt companies, when I'd rather just sneak past all of them. Unfortunately Ubisoft said "Nah, let's have you kill people. Fuck how you want to play, play how we want you to.")

Past these huge, right-in-your-face flaws, I still loved the game, and so did a bunch of other people with the same opinion as me.

TL;DR: I never talked shit about Map Editor nor did I mean to. All I really did from what I can tell was state my personal reason on why I don't use Map Editor as well as make people who use Map Editor (or plan to) aware of this issue, while still allowing them to choose which is better for them, whether it'd be Menyoo Object Spooner or Map Editor. My personal choice is Menyoo Spooner but anybody can use Map Editor if they please.

And besides, I didn't really say for people not to use it, did I?

  • MODERATOR

@Shaezbreizh i didn't know it was a prop, my bad

  • @shephart fun fact, some one said me that long time ago ( maybe it was you can't remember xd), so i started to make the real castaway island ;P
this is a low poly test to see if the relief was good ( it wasn't that good so i'm currently restarting the map in a better way)

    https://imgur.com/VM9KRuH
( this is the other side of island, not the one with the famous triangular beach where he start thought)
i'll try to finish it when i'll have time ;P

@reacon yeah np, anyway some " mapper " claiming being " da best " ( yeah i know pretty pretentious guys xd) don't even know lel

@krashadam ok ok nvm then xd
It's just you're not the only one to knockdown Map editor, while it's a great tool ( build in early gta modding day), and that make me a bit crazy, cause if guadmaz didn't release it i'll probably never have start modding, nor modeling xD

    It's alright, minor misunderstanding.

also that island is looking real good, almost makes me wonder if it were possible to model an entire made-up city. I should really take up modelling. Any GTA5 map modding tools existent for Blender?

  • @krashadam i thought the same about the island before but now it look so shity to me that why iwanna redo it ;P
about city yep, sure it require to know how doing LoD, and to get lot of free time xd

for blender no saddly, however, evn if i was totaly a newbie in moddeling and started only some time ago, and that i found 3ds pretty chaotique, i must say now that it was easyer than i thought to learn how to use it.
So if you know a bit, like blender, i guess you'll have no difficulty to start with 3ds ( student version is free if you wanna try), wich have gims evo ( tool for converting material).

  • @Shaezbreizh I was actually already aware about 3DS Max, problem is, I've already created so many accounts for it that I don't feel like creating another email just so I can download 3DS Max, again. I also forgot the pass to one of my accounts, lol.

  • @krashadam why not just reset your password ?

  • @Shaezbreizh I was actually thinking about that but I was also concerned that it would've required me accessing an email address that I don't have access to. I'll try it tomorrow.

map editor is loading pretty fine, sure that isn't that fast than ymap ( spawn via script oblige ) but it's still a really usefull tool to create map since we can now turn xml to ymap
so pls stop talking dirt about map editor, you don't like that your right, but don't disgust other people of it while there is no reason

'While there is no reason' is debatable. :) The author himself said "The more props you spawn, the worse performance you will get." And that's understating it. Guadmaz certainly deserves our respect for being a pioneer in the map editing field. But the simple reality is, that Map Editor just can't cut it any more in the 'thousands of objects' ymap world (with a very high likelihood of your game just crashing after loading a few hundred). And Menyoo is endlessly better for precision building than Map Editor.

Btw, Menyoo maps can be directly converted by ME2YMAP too.

Map Editor still has features Menyoo could learn from, like RemoveFromWorld, and the AutoSave (in case your game crashes, mid-building).

  • @meimeiriver The prop performance issue isn't an argument anymore since solla released his converter to ymap lel.

I agree than menyoo is more accurate, how ever, once you're used to map editor control it's really easy to do precise thing ( it's just that instead of working on a 0,001 it work per 0,25 wich is enough to do precise stuff, the unprecise map are mostly due to mapper lazyness not the tool itself )
Also menyoo control and camera are weird compare to map editor and slow the mapping process to my taste that why i only used it for thing that really need it ( marker, vehicle, ped mostly)

And yeah, menyoo have advantage than map editor don't have, but as you said map editor also have advantage that menyoo don't get ( make long time i didn't use menyoo, but from what i remember it couldn't spawn door that don't fall in ground for exemple lel)

And sure, menyoo is still updated that why it can do ymap ( i guess maffins just take the script of solla ..), but that not like if it was hard to turn map editor to ymap xd

I recently tried to spawn a heli with Menyoo, to place it as a prop (after having exited the vehicle, of course). Once I started moving it around, lel indeed, it fell off the roof. :) Fortunately, you can (temporarily) disable its 'dynamic' properties, to position it properly. You can do the same with dynamic doors. All-in-all, it's probably largely what tool you're used to.

My own frustration with Map Editor stems from the pre ME2YMAP era, where I had to struggle to get entire (often huge) maps to load in Map Editor first, so I could export to Menyoo format.

Assuming this @ was meant to be for me, I appreciate the hard work you put into the project (and apparently are still doing). Even in its old state, your addon still contained many useful objects.
