Failed zlib call

  • MODERATOR

    Hello,

What a surprise, GTA crashing yet again. This time however, I'm getting failed zlibcall, reboot, verify game files blah blah blah. I've narrowed the problem down to the mods folder and exhausted every other option than reinstalling but i can't a**ed to do that so I came here to ask if you guys had any ideas. I'm running latest patch and here's my launcher log

There's no point in me posting my shv and shvdn log as i know it's in my mods folder, just don't know where exactly and i cba reinstalling all my mods

@Reacon Only ever time I heard of this was, related to problems with dinput8.dll (the ASI Loader, in main). Are you sure it's still dated May 2, 2015?

  • MODERATOR

@meimeiriver yep still is, narrowed it down to update.rpf but yet again no clue where in there. i would use the vanilla one but visualv, mvga etc is installed and adds a shit ton of new files into there and i cba installing all them again. any ideas what might be causing it? haven't changed anything and has worked fine up until today

  • MODERATOR

@meimeiriver just tried re-installing dinput8.dll as well just in case and never worked so i give up for tonight, will try again tomorrow

  • @Reacon I guessed zlib is related to zip compression (just googled). Maybe OpenIV can't find this library? What's the OpenIV.log telling?
@meimeiriver The hook itself hasn't been updated ever since.

I know. :) Windows 10 has its own dinput8.dll, though (system32), and I have seen it happen where ppl erroneously sought to 'update' it with their Windows version. Hence, my question whether it was still the original.

Zlib is extremely old; and I've had it compiled-in many times on just about any library on my old UNIX (FreeBSD) system. It is indeed compression related. Make Visuals Great Again (which Reacon appears to have installed) is a big mod, though, so there's no immediate telling (for me, at least) where the problem may reside.

P.S. Zlib will be used for any graphics library handling .png files, for instance (and probably more). So, I would look for a graphics library (or a call thereto) first, if I were Reacon.

  • MODERATOR

@meimeiriver I did replace a texture with a png one but then after the crashing I reverted it back to the vanilla. I know it’s 100% in update.rpf as if I use the vanilla update.rpf it works fine

@meimeiriver Absolutely great advise, yes. This error could as well be forwarded through an indirect call. :thumbsup_tone3:

Oh and about some people replacing the hook with the original dinput8.dll: :face_palm: LOL

@Reacon I'm sorry you are in such trouble. I think @meimeiriver has nailed it. I would look for any graphics modifications as the most probable culprit.

  • MODERATOR

    @Cyron43 @meimeiriver I think you're right, i replaced the x64 folder in update.rpf which got rid of failed zlib call error, but now i just get crashes from the loading screen after i select story mode. here's my;
    launcer log: https://pastebin.com/mSiScXAA
    SHV log: https://pastebin.com/1dWUqBcg
    SHVDN log: https://pastebin.com/WVypEd3C
OpenIV log(it's long as hell): https://pastebin.com/mzqqGECc

  • @Reacon shv log is clean, shvdn log is clean. OpenIV.log yielded no results on search for 'error' and neither for 'fail'. The launcher.log however shows that nasty in- and outfile sh*t. Run GTA V with administrator rights and see if that solves the issue.
    Then there's also this:
    Device lost.
    [2018-04-26 17:12:10.766] [WARNING] Resetting device...
    [2018-04-26 17:12:10.769] [WARNING] Reset failed with D3DERR_DEVICELOST.
    [2018-04-26 17:12:21.886] [WARNING] Resetting device...
    [2018-04-26 17:12:22.300] [ ERROR ] GameComm: ReadFile failed.
    [2018-04-26 17:12:22.371] [DISPLAY] Reset succeeded.
[2018-04-26 17:12:22.649] [DISPLAY] Game exited with code 0xc0000005
    [2018-04-26 17:12:22.649] [ ERROR ] Unable to stat out-file!

Looks to me as if the launcher couldn't find your graphics card driver as stated in the settings file. The reset was successful but couldn't write back the information. Again, try running GTA V with administrator rights.

Nice catch! Almost makes 'Make Visuals Great Again' the culprit. I'd get rid of that (if only for the test). Make Visuals Visible Again should be the highest priority. :)

  • MODERATOR

@meimeiriver @Cyron43 thanks for the help guys, i tried running it as administrator but it said im not running the game through the steam client. I also tried using my vanilla files(ones i replaced with MVGA files) and it never worked either, just crashed again

  • MODERATOR

I’m busy rn but when I get a chance I’m gonna just completely take out my modded update folder and use the vanilla files, see if that changes anything cause when I replace update.rpf/common/data with vanilla files it does nothing so I dont think the problem lies within there

  • MODERATOR

@meimeiriver @Cyron43 FINALLY got it working although it's kinda bs how i got it to work. i replaced the dlcpacks folder with the vanilla one and it loaded up fine. now, i read somewhere trying to fix the zlib error that it can relate to a problem in mpheist so i took the vanilla mpheist folder out, and replaced the previous one with that vanilla folder and boom it loaded, but here comes the bs part... i already replaced that mf folder yesterday and it didn't work which is annoying asf! but anyway i can't thank you guys enough for your help, probably would've had to reinstall my game if it wasn't for you guys!

  • MODERATOR

@Reacon Glad you got it working again!

Yeah, since this is a graphics game, LOL, that Zlib error can come from anywhere: but normally shouldn't from things that were working before, like mpheist.

QuantV, like Make Visuals Great Again, tends to copy many things to the update.rpf file. For future reference, it wouldn't hurt to have a copy of the original lying around, prior to installing such a mod, as troubleshooting those graphic enhancement mods is usually sheer undoable (other than de-installing them again), considering how many settings they can mess with.

  • @Reacon I'm glad you got it fixed now. Have fun.
@meimeiriver @Reacon You guys are a pleasure to work with. :thumbsup_tone3:

  • MODERATOR
