Light/Shadow Flicker with Natural Vision Remastered
-
Hi !
I've recently gotten GTAV and wanted to make it look a bit better, NVM seems to be one of the main mods so I tried it. Unfortunately, I'm getting heavy light flicker, the lights or shadows appear/disappear as I move around. I removed the mod and vanilla GTA is fine. No other games are affected (running Doom and Project Cars maxed out without issue).
NVM is the only mod installed.
GTAV is maxed out on settings (2k resolution), I've tried setting everything to absolute minimum but the issue remains.
Setup is
i7-6850K
32GB DDR4 RAM
GEFORCE GTX 1080Drivers up to date.
Video of problem -> https://streamable.com/p54uw
Thanks for any advice.

Not sure how relevant it is, but as an experiment I installed Redux & Reshade and there are no problems there. Appears to be specific to NVM.
Thoughts?
-
@milestail did you use the dynamicshadows.asi?
-
Not intentionally if I did
I followed the installer instructions and installed Visual V before NVM as instructed. The issue was present so I uninstalled both and installed NVM alone and the problem persisted. Is dynamicshadows.asi part of Visual V?

@milestail Did you fix this issue? Im having the same problem
-
Sorry buddy I didn't.
I'm using Redux and tweaking the Reshade shader config it supplies to be a little less saturated.
I've given up trying to get NVM to work.
-
So I thought about giving up but my OCD won't let me. Even increased the voltage on the 1080 incase the card was at fault.
I have noticed that its fine in the middle of the night, it only occurs as it begins to transition into daytime.

I have the same issue. It's most noticeable at night, but I've noticed the same during daytime. It can happen with shadows and with light sources. I also have another glitch that only happens with this mod causing certain cars to change colors depending on the angle I look at them, also in a flickering manner. It happens to at least 5% of all cars and to several(probably specific) models.
The mod looks spectacular, but these glitches are too distracting, so I ended up uninstalling. What a shame.
-
The car changing color glitch is easy to fix. Just go into the NVR_emissive folder in your dlc packs and remove the offending car files. There's 3 or 4 in total. I just steal one when i see it glitching, note down the name and then go delete the file.
As for the light/shadow flickering, i'm still looking a solution. Its so annoying because the game looks so much better running NVR. I don't get the problem running vanilla or Redux, but don't want to play using them anymore as NVR looks so much better.
If there's a new version released soon I just hope this gets addressed.
There's got to be some shadow settings that got tweaked that have just broken it at certain times of day/night.

@milestail @Blatman @DaveGTI @Hoversuits
Try setting this in all your timecycle files (w_clear etc):
<light_falloff_mult> 0.7000 0.7000 0.7000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 0.7000 0.7000 0.7000</light_falloff_mult>
If it works you can thank @Reclusive-Eagle for his research. See his explaination & a bit more info here.

also, in the initial video by the OP I see shadows from lampposts disappear
had this bug myself a few months ago
pinpointed it to be theDynamic shadows from pedestrian vehicles - shadow.asi
from VisualVCP said in discord on 12/05/2017: game has a limit of 16 lights with dynamic shadows that's why it disappears sometimes

I have exactly this issue, and it's useful to know I'm not alone. Same set up - VisualV with NVR.

@bluegunk
Refer to DaveGTI's post further up the page for the solution to the NVR texture flickering issue
It's '.ytd' files you will be removing in the 'nvr_emissive' dlc.

Thanks @a63nt-5m1th & @ReNNie
I didn't use the Dynamic shadows option with Visual V, so I'm assuming that's not contributing to my shadow/light flicker issue?
Just a question on the timecycle files, I've finally got around to adjusting them as you suggested, but I'm not exactly sure which ones to modify.
I found the line in w_clear and swapped the values to @Reclusive-Eagle ones, all good. But do i need to edit every other file in my Timecycle folder?
For example the w_blizzard settings are all at 1.0000, so should be fine as is?
Sorry I've not messed with this stuff before.Thanks again for your help

Ok so just further to this, I've gone through and edited the:
w_clear, clearing, extrasunny, foggy, neutral, overcast, rain and smog timecycle files.
Those seemed to be the ones with different values. Will test and see how everything goes.
Cheers

@DaveGTI
Yeah, the dynamic shadows shouldn't be playing any part in your issue if you didn't install it.The default setting for '<light_falloff_mult>' is:
<light_falloff_mult> 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000 1.0000</light_falloff_mult>
if any are like that then you do not need to edit them.
Note: There will be 2 '<light_falloff_mult>' lines in each 'w_clear/extrasunny/foggy.xml' etc file that you may need to edit. One line in the '<region name="URBAN">' section, which is for the main city area & one in the '<region name="GLOBAL">' section, that is for all the other areas of the game (the countryside/small towns etc).
As far as I take it from @Reclusive-Eagle's explaination the flickering shadows are caused by the changes in the '<light_falloff_mult>' settings at certain times of day (20:00-06:00 mostly) being a bit too rapid/extreme/change in value from hour to hour. If you still get a little flicker with reclusive-eagle's settings try defaulting all '<light_falloff_mult>' lines to '1.0000' (like at the top of this post) that should 100% eliminate all flicker caused by '<light_falloff_mult>' changes.
If you are still having issues after that, it must be something else causing it. Post some pics or a video of your issues if you can

Thanks!
How you explained the editing is exactly how I had tried it, and after testing last night I played through a couple night/day cycles and didn't notice any flickering at all.As far as I could tell, visually it's made zero difference other than stopping night lights strobing like crazy.
It's amazing because it was so bad in some sections before, I'd just fast forward to morning. Now I can enjoy all hours again haha.You guys are awesome, thanks so much for helping!

hey uh, I'm having the same issue and I couldn't fix it this way but you say it worked for you, would you mind uploading the timecycle xmls so I can see if that removes the issue for me too? I'd really appreciate it

@nineth
Single Player Apartment has also been known to cause lights to switch on & off/flicker when it is used in combination with NVR.
A good way to identify if your problem resides (to some degree at least) in the timecycle files is to default only them back to vanilla (make backup first etc). If the flickering goes away timecycle values definitely have something to do with it. If the flickering is still there, you can eliminate the timecycle files as a variable & look elsewhere for the problemEdit: Just noticed your Night light flickering with VisualV and NVR thread. Good solution find
Glad you got it fixed
Thought I'd drop a link to it here for others that find their way here with similar problems

same is happening to me when i turn weather to extra sunny or raining or anything exept clear sky turns white
