Unable to install mods

Hi I have spent hours trying to install mods, I have installed the program called OpenIV, and a Vanillaworks extended. I then followed instructions from a youtube video. Upon installing my first car mod, the game failed to start and there was an error message. To start the game I had to delete the mod folder. Can someone please send me instructions on how to successfully install a car mod and to open the game successfully after the mod installation.
