Exit code 0xc0000005 indicates a game crash (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION)

  • Hello, I'm having this constant issue with the game crashing every time I try to play it, now let me make it clear, I do not mod the game whatsoever, I play GTA Online 99% of the time when playing GTA, but I've noticed that this is a recurring issue within the modding community as well and this might be a good place to look for answers, that being said..

GTA 5 has been working flawlessly a few days ago but for whatever reason one day it decided to start crashing with the same exact error which is: Exit code 0xc0000005 indicates a game crash (STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION)

This is how my launcher.log file looks like:

What I have done in the attempt of fixing the issue is the following:

**- Use DDU to cleanly reinstall my GPU drivers which is an Nvidia, twice

    • Reinstall DirectX
    • Reinstall GTA 5 twice
    • Delete all found FiveM files on my PC
    • Contact Rockstar Support twice
    • Move the page file from my SSD (where my game is located) to my "F:" drive
    • Disable disk defragmentation for my SSD
    • Lowering the graphics settings
    • Playing with High Texture Quality instead of Very High
    • Resetting my BIOS back to Default, although never changing it in the first place
    • Disabling non Microsoft services in msconfig
    • Deleting my Antivirus Software
    • Scanning my PC for malware
    • Deleting cfg.dat and pc_settings.bin a few times
    • Playing with Steam completely closed out (I own the Rockstar Warehouse copy)
    • Overclocking my GPU
    • Setting GTA 5's priority to high or even real time while setting every other processes priority to low
    • Updating Social Club a few times
    • Disabling Startup services
    • Verifying Cache multiple times

The game just doesn't want to budge whatsoever and I'm running out of solutions, if somebody could help, that would be great.

I'll note that the game crashes randomly and it doesn't matter what I'm doing in the game, it can be in the menu, or while driving, or just plainly existing, it also doesn't matter how many minutes or hours pass, sometimes the game crashes after 5 minutes, sometimes after an hour, sometimes it never even crashes, but when it does which now 99% of the time, my launcher.log file is exactly the same.
Mind you, checking the Event Viewer shows me that the faulty module is the GTA5.exe itself, so I'm completely confused.

For obligatory reasons my PC Specs are:

    • Intel-Core i7-6700 3.40GHz
    • GTX 980 4GB
    • 12 GB RAM
    • around 500 mb/s SSD and a normal HDD
    • Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

  • Try these methods. As weird as they sound it actually worked for me. I don't know if it was my USB controller or GeForce Experience that needed to be updated. Try them and see which one worked. I had this problem today and this fixed it.

  • There has to be something strange happening lately, because I also had a bit of a headache recently and I just know I have all directories and dependencies right.

I seriously think, that something got badly mixed up on the latest Windows update.

Just last Saturday, I powered my computer on and it automatically closed down right after and rebooted itself. I wasn't alarmed, because this is what computers at my work sometimes do after they are updated.

And once that happened, I was unable to exit GTA normally. I was always getting "GTA exited unexpectedly" with the very same exit code that @_Bennie_ does. Even more so, my LSPDFR also started to struggle with even the simplest tasks. Even the 100% reliable callouts made by stars like Albo1125 were crashing all the time!

I tried to revert my computer which made problems only worse. Canceled the revert and tried to revert once again. The second revert system was, luckily, successful.

And only then, I was able to normally quit the game without any crash messages. Yesterday, I also played some LSPDFR and didn't encounter any problem at all.

With all that being said, I am inclined to believe that it is Windows Update which broke the game for me. I turned this service completely off. I'm not interested in receiving any updates from them anymore. Average user like me can't even tell the difference from one update to another, so why would I even care?

  • Many people are reported to have issues with the new Windows Update. It's up to Rockstar to find a fix for this error. If they do fix it, I hope it's a hotfix than a whole update, but ever since this new windows update people have claimed that their new games crash. I just updated my graphics card right now. Got into the game, it crashed within 5 minutes of playing it. I didn't even make it two blocks down the road before it crashed. Windows really messed up this game for their update.

  • Do you happen to know if there's any name or "serial number" to this update @Algonquin1234?

It's just unbelievable... How on earth can an OS update break programs instead of improving the way they work in...? I have never met with anything like this and, like I said, will not take a risk of updating the OS anymore.

Besides, I don't care about Rockstars "hotfixes" either. That would mean I would have to update my entire game and I don't want to. Version 1.0.1604.0 is the most stable one I have played so far. Both for Story Mode and LSPDFR. The latter being usually more sensitive to any software choke points.

  • @TheMurderousCricket What I do know it's that it's windows 10 version 1903. This version is by far the worst I've seen since Windows Vista. I can't play GTA V or Just Cause 4 or even The Crew 2 because it'll crash and I'm sure with the code like GTA V.

  • Heavens... :scream: All the best games - not working. I feel for you.

But you may as well try what I did and revert system to a date where it still worked.

    Then disable updates.

But! I think this mysterious update is actually shared throughout Windows environment. I have 8.1 and first encountered this problem at roughly the same time as everybody else did! :/

Drunk programmers shouldn't be allowed to access computers...

  • @TheMurderousCricket I think they were more concerned about user interfaces and when doing that they messed up games for people. If you go tell Microsoft about it they'll tell you to reinstall windows again. Seems dumb what they did as most of their features are useless to me anyway. The only reason I updated was for virus protection. I didn't expect this at all. It's amazing GTA IV works for me like always but GTA V crashes in like 3 minutes. This is terrible.

  • I have a pretty good antivirus with ransomware protection, so I don't care about the updates really.

And I agree - it is disappointing to see that you are not able to go about one of your favorite pastimes. But I'm facing the same, though for a different reason - my cooling fan or PSU is failing, so I'll have to leave my computer for servicing for three - four days. It's roaring like a mad bear. :confounded:

By the way, it's official now - here's an article about this game-breaking update:

    https://www.extremetech.com/computing/297956-microsoft-latest-windows-10-1903-update-can-cause-cpu-spikes-break-desktop-search

  • @Algonquin1234 @TheMurderousCricket I want to thank you both for having this conversation here over the past few days. I read it and thought nothing of it until my pc wanted to update yesterday to that 1903. Luckily i was able to stop it before it started, but I only knew to do so because of this thread.

  • Usually I'm not the first to discover anything IT-related, so I'm glad I (we) could help and save you a headache @chonkie!

  • Got my PC Tuesday, started playing and modding but the game kept crashing all the time... I'm on 1809. I'm currently reinstalling the game as I read this thread, if someone knows how to minimize these crashes please let us know.

  • @ugopug Start a new thread after reading this so it will be easier to specifically help you with your issues. https://forums.gta5-mods.com/topic/13256/how-to-ask-for-help-and-support

  • I did a little bit of digging around with this issue and apparently in Windows version 1903 there's a specific program running in the background that takes a lot of memory. I tried this method and played the game for 3 hours with no crash but I'm still gonna look into this and the fix was this.

    1. Go into settings
    2. Click Privacy
    3. Scroll down on the left side of the settings till you see background apps
    4. Disable Background apps
This method has worked for me, but I will update if anything new happens.

  • Unfortunately after 2 days without this issue, Windows yet again decided to update forcibly and the issue appeared once again today. After doing the same thing from my post above the issue will not be resolved. It seems that the games work whenever they want to or when windows let's them. I'm out of ideas here.

  • Make sure the new MS update didnt turn on the horrible microsoft game center stuff in the background. That combined with the 'wonderful' new microsoft license check software ramps your background services up and loads up your memory and CPU. GTA is not the best optimised game for windows memory to begin with. Make sure ALL microsft game and game center stuff is OFF in you PC settings. In task mamager, check if microsoft license check is popping up every few minutes and slamming your CPU. You can suspend the service if thats the cause, but ONLY suspend it during game play. Left suspended, Micro$oft will stop allowing any program to run {including GTA} after a few hours, if that program requires a license check EVEN IF ITS NOT A MICROSOFT OWNED PROGRAM. Literally GTA will freeze telling you "its taking longer than expected to varify game ownership". After disable all the game center junk, my game is running fine again.

  • Ever since the update this has been the issue. Makes me wonder if it's the new launcher and the hooks it has into the game itself to act as DRM.

  • Ok... Everyone I got good news... After many, and I mean, MANY attempts, I finally found a "fix".
Fix is in between " because it's not really a fix per say, I just figured out what was causing the problem with absolute certainty.

I was able to recreate the crash multiple times by going to the clothes shop and trying to pair a certain type of clothes, this happened by mistake. But every time I tried the same combination of clothes the crash that also happened mid game sometimes 10 minutes in sometimes 2 hours would occur.

I did everything every known fix you can imagine, I did it and nothing worked. And you wont believe when I tell you how to AVOID the problem. Remember I don't know how to fix it, I leave that to Rockstars.

The problem is most likely some sort of incompatibility between the game and Windows Security
Status_Access_Denied says it all and to circumvent this common problem among other games and apps you will need to shut it down. SHUT IT ALL DOWN!

Disable all of windows security measures and firewall, I know this sounds scary but if you know what you do on your computer, you'll be safe.

Also it is important to set ALL apps related to GTA V to run as ADMIN, all apps in steam GTA folder and both Rockstars launcher folders. (NOTE: I also remove FS optimizations and DPI settings)

    AND... that's it...

I tried recreating the crash and it held up... To my surprise it held up... I've left the game on causing me to lose quite some cash as I spend about 90k every 48mins but... ye... didn't crash.

This worked for me and proves that Nvidia drivers are not the problem, but windows and the Rockstars either Launcher or Game app.

NOTE: just remembered I've also uninstalled Nvidia Experience , NOT the drivers just the app as it is known to cause problems. I have the Latest drivers.

I leave here the best bits on my many crashes just so you know this is not a joke.

  • I was dealing with this error for a while.
After latest stupid launcher update my modded GTA stopped running... wasted days to figure it out.. in launcher logs i would just get stupid access violation... Thanks... no thank...
To know which mod is giving you issues, use an application event viewer instead , it will point it out which mods is messing up. In my case it was ASI patch file in the main directory
    Good luck to all.
