Idea: AI upscaled vehicle textures

  • There's this mod for VC which uses AI/ML to upscale the vanilla textures: https://gtaforums.com/topic/925931-ai-enhanced-textures-for-vice-city/

Which got me thinking: what if I run, let's say, my Ingot's textures through that program, do you guys think it would make it look better? I know jackshit about machine learning and all that though.

  • @Rstein try any ViceCity mods website, people here mostly focus on GTA5

  • @ArmaniAdnr I don't think Vulcar had a Ingot in 1986 m8

(this is about GTA V, not VC)

  • @Rstein so you think to use that program which is for VC on GTA5 files right?

  • @ArmaniAdnr There is no program to upscale VC textures, it uses a neural network to upscale them.

Or something like that, that's where my knowledge of machine learning stops.

  • @Rstein oh ok, don't know nothing about it :grimacing: just seen VC and pictures from VC so thought it's about VC, sorry :see_no_evil:

  • @Rstein the VC mod creator used Topaz Gigapixel, an upscaling software and manually upscaled each texture and then reimported them back into game via the mod - it doesn't upscale them in real time unfortunately, like DLSS does in modern games. I really wish to get DLSS in GTAV. Neural Networks make everything better lol.

But yes you technically could upscale textures in Gigapixel to 4K or 8K and even improve them with denoising JPEG artifact removal etc but they will be VERY LARGE files and be a heavy compute cost, but do it.

  • @Avantgarde22 Why thank you for the reply. Hi-res Ingot textures would be great because the GTA IV era textures on it are atrociously bad in places.

@Rstein I heard some good shit about AI-upscaled textures in older games (wasn't it an old Final Fantasy game?). In GTA V, however, I fear we'd run out of texture memory first before we'd see any benefit.

The fact I run LODs all but disabled (LOD distance set to 5000 in vehicles.meta) on my Ingot doesn't help either :^)

  • Depends on the vanilla texture resolution, but whether it would make a difference or not us unknown until you try it. I'm pretty sure GIGAPIXEL has a free trial you can use to test out some texture upscaling.
