GTA V Redux without doubling install size
-
The GTA V Redux mod requires copying all game files to a mods folder in order to use the default files for GTA Online.
However, I do not use GTA Online and wish to skip this step in order not to double install size. Thus, overwriting the default files with the mod files.Does anyone know how I can go about doing this? Thank you.
(The mod works well for me as per the usual method of installing. I tried replacing files in the game folder with those in the mods folder, but this leads to the installer wanting to update the game as the mod files do not match the default ones.)

@olivierhacking Rock* social club launcher automatically repairs your actual game files (not in mods folder). There is no other way. Sorry.
-
@olivierhacking Maybe this can help you http://www.lcpdfr.com/files/file/13209-gta-v-update-blocker/
but idk if the launcher still verify game files ,( I always use a mod folder) you should try with 1 file edited before installing the redux mod (something like common.rpf , it's a light file, not so long to download, just in case)
You should use a mods folder , it's better , if you mess up with a file and you forgot to a make back up you can still replace this one with the original.
Redux is something like less than 117Go for me (the entire game+mods folder)

@yeahhmonkey This is what I tried before - see the end of my first post. I tried it again following your instructions, but encountered the same problem where the GTA V Launcher immediately starts updating the game files.
@cgz linked an update blocker that might help this, but this really isn't the solution I am looking for. Updates are essential!I guess the only option for me now is to run VisualV. I am running a 512GB SSD, and cannot afford to have a 140GB game. Even though Redux is so great.

@yeahhmonkey said in GTA V Redux without doubling install size:
You could always instal redux.
then open all rpf files and put them inside the orginal one.it's a lot of work but it should work
How do i know which files in the modded rpfs to move to the default rpfs?
-
@yeahhmonkey I am not very experienced with this type of modding.
I can only open the rpf files 1 by 1 using OpenIV correct? From which rpf file do I have to move all contents to desktop? I do not really understand what you mean.
Thanks for your help man! Much appreciated. Excuse my inabilityEdit: If I understand correctly I will open every modded rpf file and copy its contents to the default corresponding rpf files. Then delete mods folder.
Don't you think the launcher will notice the files do not match the defaults and just try updating again?

@olivierhacking It won't matter how you do this, if you put modded files into the original game files/folders, they will get replaced by the launcher. And it won't matter if you do them all at once, or file by file.
If you try modding the original files and then blocking it from the internet, it will ask you to connect at some point to verify activation... at which point it will update itself.
The only people that can run with modded game files in their main GTAV folder, are the ones using a pirated version of the game.

Wow, that really is a letdown. Pirated versions have a benefit over legitimate versions in this case...
Thanks for the clarification. I will move on to another mod that will not require doubling install size.

@olivierhacking It's one of the biggest annoyances about this whole system, where single-player gamers are forced online and forced into having their files updated. As well as having their directories filled with GB's worth of multiplayer patch data that adds nothing to their game, of course.
-
@yeahhmonkey So okay... let me understand this fully.
You have a single GTAV installation running under Steam, that is fully updated to the latest game version and has the original game files modded and it never updates those files when you launch it and the Social Club launcher runs... is that what you are saying?
If you have exactly that, then I apologise for misunderstanding how it works.
-
@yeahhmonkey I am more interested in how you manage to stop the Rockstar Social Club from demanding activation and forcing any updates, because from what I had read previously, it is the RSC that forces the updates, not Steam. From a mod creators perspective, an update is the worst thing that can happen, so stopping that and not having to be online to activate could be really useful.
So when you launch the game and the Social Club launcher runs... what happens? Do you still see the same login notifications as I get?
I had a similar discussion with someone else a while back, who told me exactly what you are telling me and when I asked them that very same question... there was silence. I actually spotted one of their posts a short while later, on an unrelated thread and it turned out they were using a pirated version. So please understand that my doubts are fuelled by someone else trying to con me into believing what they were saying... which was a lie.
But if your launcher shows the latest version of 1.0.231.0 etc and your game is 877/1.36, then I am genuinely intrigued by how it's done.
Edit: Perhaps you could explain this thread? https://forums.gta5-mods.com/topic/2587/two-game-installations
Which for the benefit of others, says this:
In my steam location i got 2x Grand theft auto V folder.
1 i name Clean_Grand theft auto V_clean
The other Grand Theft auto V
When done modding to go online i do thisRename Grand theft auto v to
mods_ Grand theft auto v_modsand rename the Clean_Grand theft auto V_clean
to
Grand theft auto V

@LeeC2202 You are quite a detective..
I'm interested about this too.
-
@yeahhmonkey If you truly have done this, then the instructions on how to do it should be the first thing you see when you come to this site.
I think everyone wants to know how this is done. You could become site hero in the space of 30 seconds here.

@Frazzlee I have that installed and it makes no difference.. I still get the file check and update, if I change any of the original files... this video will be very helpful for a lot of people I suspect. Unless of course there is a version of openiv.asi that I don't know about... which is very likely as I still use 2.6.
-
Amazing that is works for you. I am chatting with @yeahhmonkey and we think it must come down to the fact that he uses the Steam version, whereas I use the Rockstar version, and I assume @LeeC2202 does as well...
Why that makes the difference I don't know!
-
@olivierhacking Yep, I use the retail version... I have just said to @yeahhmonkey if I just changed a single texture, the game would download 2GB of rpf file to replace it.
-
This is what happens when I try and change the original files. All I have changed is a single ped in x64v.rpf. I have renamed my mods folder so there is nothing being accessed from there.
Sorry about the size, I normally record on half-size and forgot to change it... you can see what happens though.
-
@yeahhmonkey Nope, it immediately tries to download an update folder and put it back.
-
@yeahhmonkey OpenIV introduced the mods folder when Rockstar started checking and updating the original files. I have always had to use a mods folder.
But I was late to the GTAV party.
-
@yeahhmonkey By the looks of it, anyone using the Steam version has no real need to use the mods folder. Which is good because it makes things nice and simple but also bad because it takes away the security of knowing that you can never break the game.
Unfortunately for @olivierhacking it still means that they need a double sized install as they're using the same version as myself... which is a real pain.
Thank you for taking the time to do that video btw. I think we have both proved that both situations exist.
-
@LeeC2202 Yes, it is a pity we need to double the install size. However, I am happy we uncovered this information thanks to @yeahhmonkey ! I am sure this will be helpful for future GTA V modders with the same question
