Custom ped models.

Hello, I'm trying to make my own model as a ped. I tried using GIMS with 3ds max and zmodeller but every-time I think I'm done and export the model, the game crashes when I select the ped model. Is there any tutorial /forum which could explain the process of exporting models from one of these programs to correct formats, some important notes, mistakes and overall how to do it? I watched many forums, videos, but none of them helped yet. I feel like I'm nearly finished and there are some minor mistakes I make during the process which eventually causes the game to crash. So if you have any good tips, guides, tutorials, I'd be very glad for them.
