Where do i find GTAV_root file?!

  • I keep seeing "find file GTAV_root/..." but i have no file with that name. I downloaded GTAV from Steam. I can find "Grand Theft Auto V" in my "Program Files (x86)/Steam/Steamapps/common" file. And there's also a "GTA V" in my "OneDrive\Documents\Rockstar Games" file. But that's it. And idk which one they are referring to IF they are referring to either one of those.

  • @srctimber
The GTA V root folder is the main Grand Theft Auto V game folder, the one that contains 'GTA5.exe'

    So, for you, this one:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Grand Theft Auto V

Clarified this in the guide. Do the Rockstar Games launcher and Epic Games launcher installations have convenient ways to locate the folder?

  • @ikt

    Epic Games Launcher:

    According to Ubisoft,

"There is currently no feature in the Epic Games Launcher to directly locate the installation path" (bottom of page).

Default install location is this anyway:
    C.\Program Files\Epic Games\

You'll have to get someone with the Epic version to confirm this next one (I'm just going by what I can find on the net), but maybe:

Open C:\ProgramData\Epic\UnrealEngineLauncher\LauncherInstalled.dat in a text editor & use the InstallLocation value for GTA5 to find the install directory?

    Rockstar Games Launcher:

Rockstar Games Launcher GTA5 Install Location

If either Rockstar or Epic have a way to create a shortcut directly to the '.exe', obviously there is right-click shortcut > 'Open file location' also.

  • Even with the best search software it will be impossible to find GTAV_root. You can look for hours and you will never find it - it doesn't exist.

When instructed to find GTAV_root or the root directory/root folder the instructions are inaccurate as well. What the instructions should say is find your GTA5.exe in its installation folder because the game executable is not always in the root, in can be in a bin subfolder for example.

The OP did correctly find his executable, which in a default windows system will show up likely with the extension hidden, in other words GTA5 rather than GTA5.exe. That's another nuance.

As for finding the executable - google it, Windows search, or preferably something like Agent Ransack. Unfortunately it doesn't get easier after that.

Also, keep in mind that an installation folder can be anywhere. I keep my GTA V on a separate hard drive and the path could never be guessed - you would need to search for the .exe because it's not "program files", it's directly to Steam Library on a drive i've named Programs.

And ofc there is that instruction to press ANY key. I'm still looking for it!
