No sound on Windows is working once I open GTA V

  • I see some stuff saying that their audio isn't working but the solutions aren't work. I tried updating direct x twice and sound mixer https://tweakbox.mobi/ didn't work. Also it's not just in GTA where it's happening, no sound ever works on my PC once I open GTA. Someone help me.

  • @nikarsena

    • Does it happen as soon as you launch GTA V, or at some point after/when you are playing the game etc?

    • Is it a vanilla/no mods/fresh install etc of GTA V it happens with or have you added mods or did it used to work correctly etc?

    • I take it your sound starts working again once you restart your PC?

    • What audio device are you using? Is it the one on the Motherboard or an external PCI-E sound card etc?

    • If external, or multiple sound devices/ways to listen to sound (jack, digital, usb etc) installed. Do they all fail, or just certain ones?

    • Also, if you have a headset, say, like a TurtleBeach set that plugs in via USB. Does that work?

    • If you right-click the Windows speaker icon in the Notification Area (bottom right) & then select 'Sounds' & then go to the 'Playback' tab & test each of the playback devices in there (right-click them > 'Test'. Test them all, even the ones you don't have connected etc) does the volume bar show activity? (goes briefly up & down green etc).

    Windows Playback Devices

Start by running check disk on all your hard drives. Then run a System File Scan & then after that perhaps run DISM & make sure your Windows image is good.

After that go to 'C:\Windows\System32' & delete all of these files. Don't worry, they will be reinstalled later, but do be careful to delete only the files listed here, no others.
Back each of them up before you delete any, just in case:

    System32: (C:\Windows\System32)
    x3daudio1_0.dll
    x3daudio1_1.dll
    X3DAudio1_2.dll
    X3DAudio1_3.dll
    X3DAudio1_4.dll
    X3DAudio1_5.dll
    X3DAudio1_6.dll
    X3DAudio1_7.dll
    XAudio2_1.dll
    XAudio2_2.dll
    XAudio2_3.dll
    XAudio2_4.dll
    XAudio2_5.dll
    XAudio2_6.dll
    XAudio2_7.dll

Do the same here in 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64' with these files:

    SysWOW64: (C:\Windows\SysWOW64)

    x3daudio1_0.dll
    x3daudio1_1.dll
    X3DAudio1_2.dll
    X3DAudio1_3.dll
    X3DAudio1_4.dll
    X3DAudio1_5.dll
    X3DAudio1_6.dll
    X3DAudio1_7.dll
    XAudio2_0.dll
    XAudio2_1.dll
    XAudio2_2.dll
    XAudio2_3.dll
    XAudio2_4.dll
    XAudio2_5.dll
    XAudio2_6.dll
    XAudio2_7.dll

Now, download (if you don't have it already) & run the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer ('dxwebsetup.exe') to reinstall them all.

Test launching GTA V & see if that makes any difference?

If not, it's likely Audio Driver related & possibly caused by some sort of driver related conflict or a funky file in GTA V crashing the driver. If you haven't already, try tracking down the latest driver for your sound device & update it.
Also, try disabling the sound devices you are not using. Use Device Manager for that. You can access it by right-clicking in the very far left bottom corner of your screen & selecting 'Device Manager' from the list that appears.

You then find the sound devices you are not using, right-click them & select 'Disable device':
(you can reactivate them using the same menu at a later date, if required etc)

    Device Manager

You can also try updating the sound device you are actually using in there by selecting 'Update driver' (although, it's never been of any use to me. Most likely, it will just tell you that the best driver is installed already. Whether it is or not, is a different matter, but you never know, it's worth a try).

Load GTA V up at this point & see if there is any difference.

If you have the drivers for all your sound devices downloaded & handy, you can also try using Device Manager to uninstall the installed drivers (right-click > 'Uninstall device') & then reinstall the drivers fresh using the downloaded drivers installer (or by selecting 'Update driver' if you can't find an official download for certain ones etc).

See how you get on with all that^ anyway, & if nothing there fixes it, give me as much detail as possible as to how & when it started happening & I'll see what else I can think of

As far as audio is concerned, Windows has very much a 'if it works, it works. If it doesn't work, you're on your own' policy. Audio issues are notoriously difficult to solve. No middle ground, it's either dead easy to fix, or a very unique solution only known to God's & unicorns is required to get it back up & running. Best of luck, hope something there^ works :fingers_crossed:, but if not, let me know
