GTA V Crashing on startup screen
-
Hi. im a new user to GTA 5 mods and GTA 5 PC in general. i recently purchased GTA V PC because i enjoyed Ps4 GTA with modding in mind. just earlier my game crashed while i was playing with mods on, i already have packfileadj, gameconfig, heapadj, heapadj-ini, scripthookv, scripthookvdotnet and weaponslimit adj. i researched and read other forums and followed their methods but my game still seems to the crash on start. it was working just fine while i was playing then it just crashed.
Please Help me I just want to enjoy modding on this platform. You can contact me on my alternate discord account.
Altteeeer#7169Thanks.

- First thing, before you start to mod, is to ensure your game runs properly without any mods. I'm going to assume you updated your game recently and unfortunately the update is causing grief, like your issue, for many users.
The simplest way to test your modded system without mods is to go the root folder and rename dinput8.dll to dinput8.bak. This will keep your mods from loading (all of them). Beware of morons on Youtube and other forums telling you to replace that file with the dinput8.dll from the system32 folder.
- If your game runs stable, you can start adding mods, but be cautious, do it one by one. Beware of mod authors who ask you to install 50 other mods for their own mod. For example you don't need a weaponslimit mod unless your adding a shitload of weapons. Once your system is stable you can add these, but to start only install the basics.
From your post, I think you have all the required files in place. What you might want to do is remove all your mods (rename your mod folder), temporarily move asi files out except your trainer and OpenIV.asi, rename your scripts folder if you have one, in other words, install the minimum and test for stability.
One final note, the gameconfig.xml is a critical file for stability but unfortunately it's not one size fits all. There are several mods out there, so you might need to experiment. Don't modify this file - take the base settings until your system is stable.

@JohnFromGWN hey thanks for responding so I tried what you said about trying the game with zero mods and only trainer and openvasi but my game crashed on startup again??
-
@Manilaaa will it run, say 30 minutes, without any mods at all? Renaming dinput8.dll?
-
@JohnFromGWN i will get back to you on that. i just deleted my mods folder then it ran fine but i only ran it for a few minutes. i renamed the dinput8.dll to what you said and will try to run the game for 30 minutes. thanks for the help for now.
-
@Manilaaa if you rename dinput8.dll and the game crashes, then we have eliminated all mods from the equation.
That points to possibly a bad installation, do a verify integrity, or possibly a corrupt save game, delete it with or without backing it up.
If it's not the game, then it's hardware or software. Assuming you meet or exceed hardware requirements, update your video drivers as a starting point.
Other possible, but unlikely issues, could be permissions, firewall, net frameworks, antvirus, C++ redistributables, memory, etc.
.
A vanilla game that doesn't run will be infinitely harder to troubleshoot than any modding issue.
-
@JohnFromGWN my game seems to run fine. i ran it for 30 minutes and it ran fine. i even managed to play a mission.
it also ran when i reverted it back to dinput8.dll. should i try with adding mods including packfileadj, gameconfig, heapadj, heapadj-ini, scripthookv, scripthookvdotnet and weaponslimit adj. *i installed weaponslimit because i had used tank mods and military aircraft and the mod had said to download it so thats what i did. i also now know its not my mods crashing the game. it was something in my mods folder i dont why. any idea why that is so? thanks.
-
@Manilaaa that's great. I would suggest as a next step just OpenIV and trainer. Don't install the one that came with scripthookv.dll.
If that works install one or two addons with gameconfig.xml and HeapAdjuster.asi. You don't need the Packfile yet.
At some point you can look at log files, but they rarely tells us much after a quick crash.
-
@JohnFromGWN thanks. i will follow up with that in a bit. but im confused wether i will download these: gameconfig, heapadj, heapadj-ini, scripthookv, scripthookvdotnet and weaponslimit adj. except scripthookv.
iam also now redownloading and remaking my mod folder. which i have done by copy pasting the update folder into it.
hopefully it works. on another note my GTA worked fine when i tested OpenIv and Trainer. but my trainer didnt seem to activate.also do you have discord? maybe we can just chat there on this issue so its easier for us. but that's your choice.
-
@Manilaaa not at home now.
Suggest you start ultra conservative
ScriptHookV.dll
Dinput8.dll
Gameconfig mod
OpenIV
Menyoo or Simple TrainerRemember to rename dinput8.dll back.
The Trainer normally only requires Dinput8.dll to load it and ScriptHookV.dll for functions.
When you copy the game update folder, which includes update.rpf, you are overwriting 2 important files.
Gameconfig.xml and Dlclist.xml.So you will need to reinstall the Gameconfig.xml and might as well install the HeapAdjuster as well.
Don't install packfile yet as it has been problematic and isn't necessary without many addons installed.
Finally add one or 2 cars, nothing else, and test.
If you get a packfile error, ERR_FIL_PACK_1, then definitely add the Packfile mod.
If all works, start adding other mods, one by one.
ScriptHookV dot net is only required for scripts, so hold off for now, although it doesn't cause issues itself, scripts can however.
Try to avoid installing motorcycles and also outdated mods until you are stable.
-
@JohnFromGWN alright thanks. ill ask again when you're available. i will update what i did later.
-
@JohnFromGWN my game seems to be crashing on startup. but literally on startup before the game gets the chance to show the logo my game crashes.
-
@JohnFromGWN Ok. so after testing my mods it seems that it now puts my mods at fault. i didnt install my motorcycle mod anymore so. i dont know whats causing the crash. i already tried yesterday removing my latest mods.
-
@JohnFromGWN so apparently my game wont accept anymore than two mods it crashes when i tried putting a third or fourth mod. it worked fine before i just dont know why now.
i have all the important mods installed for it should accept for than 2 mods.
update. i changed the gameconfig file and it worked. but i already changed it before i started modding.
-
@Manilaaa your message wasn't clear. Can you add more than 2 mods now?
Remember also that if you copied update.rpf from game to mods folder, then essentially you replaced your modded version with the useless game one.
OIVs can do the same thing, replace your new gameconfig.xml with an outdated one.
-
@JohnFromGWN no i cant add more than two mods. also replace the gameconfig.xml with an older version? also about update.rpf can you tell me how that works? sorry if i dont know i just watch yt videos
I live in asia so my responses might be delayed.
-
@Manilaaa Let me clarify.
The update.rpf package/file, for the game version is at (your path will differ):
\Grand Theft Auto V\update
The update.rpf for your mods version will be at:
\Grand Theft Auto V\Mods\update
This is the package that contains the gameconfig.xml. There are 2 common ways your gameconfig.xml can be replaced with an undesired version. Which is why you need to install the modded gameconfig.xml after these 2.
-
If you copy update.rpf (or let OpenIV do it) from the game to the mods, you are overwriting your mod gameconfig.xml (the one you want) with the one from the game and likely your game will crash. So you reinstall the mod version.
-
If you installed mods with an automated OIV installer, it is very possible that the OIV replaced your gameconfig.xml with an older/outdated one. So again, if you aren't sure, you reinstall the mod version.

-
@JohnFromGWN ok thanks ill test it out later.
-
@JohnFromGWN i tested what you said but my game still seems to have crashed upon startup.
-
@JohnFromGWN regarding the crashing my game still crashes. i still havent tried re doing the whole process.
