Can the graphic configuration cause crashes?
-
I know this may seem like a stupid question.
But now that my holidays are over, I have time to play again (I know it may sound strange but it is).
The problem is that I'm having some very strange random crashes that I've never had before.
Driving around town, there's no similar pattern, I can play for 1 hour, like 15 minutes and the same thing happens, the game freezes for 2 seconds and returns me to the desktop.
So I'll keep it short Can any graphic value generate crashes?
-
@Fabito48hd I'm sorry to hear that because random crashes are the worst. What was the last mods you installed, they are likely the culprit. Or did you change in game settings before the holidays. Did you update any Windows components?
Often what seems random actually has a pattern. Spawning high polygon models, even if you delete them afterwards, can cause memory leaks and eventually loss of textures, FPS drops, and crashes.
Put your FPS in your HUD and see if there is a connection to where you crash. For example you will see a drop in complex MLOs and also in the forests of San Andreas.
-
@JohnFromGWN Hi John, a pleasure to read you.
No mate, after testing stuff all morning, no FPS drops or anything else that catches my attention. When it crashes in one place, I open the game again and drive around that area to investigate, but maybe it doesn't crash anymore.
I have a faint idea of what might be breaking my balls.
The last thing I installed, on the F7YO Gameconfig page, also has the Packfilelimit and Heap Ajuster INI Files for download.
It could be that the game is giving me problems from there, but I don't understand what values these files must have to be stable.
-
I have discovered how to "force" the crash.
With Menyoo, I generate different Peds all over the map, and then I swap the ped from one to another, causing the map I'm in to disappear to load the environment of the other ped, and then it explodes.
I don't know if I'm making myself clear.

I've been installing other Gameconfigs to try, and when I switch between characters, it keeps throwing me out.
I also removed the custommaps line from the dlclist, so the Ymaps don't load, but that didn't work either.
I installed the HeapAdjuster and PackFileLimit from their respective pages, without modifying or editing any values.
But I'm still the same, it seems that my game crashes for the simple reason of generating the map.
I've renamed my MODS folder, so it doesn't load any of the shit I have in there, and VOILÁ! Problem solved.
Now the question is where to start...
-
@Fabito48hd I noticed the shader option does cause the game to crash on startup even before the landing screen can load. I had to use the nvidia geforce experience options to turn it off so I can start again. only thing I still haven't figured out yet is what's causing the game to eventually freeze and then ctd after playing for a while.
No idea if it's the HeapAdjuster, PackFileLimit or gameconfig.
-
@MegaTBull Is it the same for you?
I'm starting to think that it must be some change we have made in our mods folder, that even if for years everything was fine, now there is some incompatibility.
-
@Fabito48hd Yeah, I also noticed when I zoom in using a sniper scope I get some heavy fps drops to the point of slideshow effect while zoomed in all the way. I'm thinking it has to be either one of those files, a script or maybe even one of the trainers causing the eventual crash after playing for a while.
In the case of mods I only use VehFuncsV, vehicles and addon peds and even got rid of some of them and the game will still ctd after a while. >_>
-
Sorry to hear that my friend.
Look, I just deleted all my mods from the shitty dlclist file and my game ran smoothly for a while, no crashes or anything weird.
So the problem isn't a file in the Mods folder, or textures from some replaced ped.
The rest of my dlclist lines, are vehicles and MLO maps. What I don't understand is if the map in question is not "loaded" because it's somewhere else, if that can still give me problems, or having an addon vehicle without generating it can also give you problems.
Besides, it's clear that the error has to do with the map, so I think it has to be something from the devil's MLOs.
Can an MLO map at one end of the map cause me stability problems without even getting to it and it is generated?
Now I'll have to put 1 by 1 all the lines until I find the one that is giving me problems, but I'd better go and have a few beers now that I'm tired of fighting with this.

Yes it can if it is poorly designed, or not supported by your configuration, or in conflict with other mods, or dozens of other unknown reasons.
My first crash was installing 1 vehicle. That's right 1 vehicle addon, correctly installed. Why should a decent system with a Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB of expensive RAM and a GeForce RTX 2070 Super 8GB crash with 1 vehicle?
It shouldn't right? Well, 1 vehicle was all that it took to bring my system crashing down. Today, I lost count of peds and vehicles but if i do a quick count on the number of installed dlc.rpf, i have 522 mods installed. That doesn't include the 300 or so peds that are also installed. However I don't use bullshit NVE and I don't use scripts except my own (exception of a music player and a camera mod).
How did I go from 1 vehicle disaster to stability? Very simply. I installed a gamecofig.xml and heap adjuster mod. I only added the packfile mod when I really increased the number of mods. I left them all at the default settings because my system was now stable.
To be honest, I've become disillusioned with troubleshooting modded GTA5 setups - I mean other peoples' games - for many reasons.
-
We all forget this game was never meant to be modded
-
The fact that there are millions of variations in configurations: endless combinations of patch/version, hardware and components, OS and software, installed mods
including addons, replaces, scripts, asi mods, and customized files -
The amount of misinformation for both installation, fixes, and tweaking (if mod says heap should be 650, then 65,000 will be 100 times better, right?).
-
Most posters asking for help post once and never return with an outcome, many won't take advice, and invariably all blame game or R* or mods for their own mistakes.
I know in your case, you are doing this systematically and intelligently, but at some point you have to accept that certain mods, certain customizations, will not work on your particular setup and sadly for unknown reasons. At some point you need to say fuck it, this mod or that mod is getting uninstalled.
I have 100s of maps and racetracks which obviously can't be installed together - particularly since some share the same locations - so I worked around that by swapping them in or out effortlessly. I gave up very early in the process trying to max out my game with every mod available.
Today I can't honestly conceive of my game breaking in a way it could not simply be fixed by removing the offending mod. The only issue I can foresee would be if Steam no longer allowed me to revert and in that case I would install a Steam emulator.

Just renaming the mods folder is the quickest way.
Same with scripts. Just rename folder.
For asi mods best to change the asi extension, if not dinput8.dll will still try, successfully or unsuccessfully, to load them.
To eliminate all mods temporarily, just rename dinput8.dll or move it.
Now the question is where to start...
I've always, in these forums, advised people with issues to do one install at a time. Install, test, rinse and repeat. However I don't follow my own advice when it comes to peds or vehicles because in thousands of installations I've only had a few issues.
Scripts are the first offenders to look at. They modify functionality, they can be outdated, they can be poorly written by a 10 year old, and they can conflict with other scripts.
Actually I take that back. The worst offenders are OIV installers and Visual Enhancement mods.
That's where I would start.
-
@JohnFromGWN Thank you for your advice friend!
As I said, by renaming the mods folder, the problems disappeared, but I had to rule out what it could be.
Maybe a ped with a different skin, maybe a replaced vehicle, or maybe an addon.
So when I deleted all the addons from the dlclist, I ruled out a lot of things.
In the end I've been putting 1 by 1 my dlclist lines, and by the way I've filtered and eliminated a few that I honestly didn't even use.
For now my game is stable again.
Now I have to investigate what HeapAdjuster and PackFileLimit really are and what the correct values are.

Just so others reading this don't get confused, deleting the entries in dlclist.xml and renaming the mods folder will have very similar results, addons won't be loaded.
Only significant difference is that renaming mods also removes all customizations including gameconfig.xml and all vehicle and ped replaces. So essentially all that is left are plugins and scripts.

You may want to read
https://forums.gta5-mods.com/topic/39325/modding-101-knowledge-helps/7This is still a WIP but provides a good introduction. The customization of heap and pack is incredibly limited, you can play with the values and experiment but you're not fixing the root cause which is a problem with mods or your PC.

Once upon a time, some radio stations didn't work for me and I had a series of problems, which I ended up discovering were the taxis, which I had replaced with others from the community.
Hard to believe? I know.

Easy to believe.
Any change can break something else but often we don't see the problem until much later.Once a system is stable, unlike the human body, it stays stable. It only becomes unstable with changes: R* updates, newly installed mods or newly edited game and mod files, recent Windows updates (including drivers), or unidentified hardware issues (including faulty RAM, drives at full storage capacity, failing components, etc.).
One thing we need to also consider is corrupt files. Every time GTA5 crashes there is the possibility of files getting corrupted. This is particularly true for the save game file. If the game crashes at the same time as an autosave it could theoretically cause a corrupt save game file. One of the reasons I disable autosave.

I see now what was causing the slideshow frame drops even though it didn't do it before some of these game updates came and it was the open all interiors file. removing it I no long get frame drops when fully zoomed in with the sniper scopes when on certain parts of the map.
Oh well, that's one less mod to use now since it now causes a performance problem with later game builds.
-
I thought that adding more mlo's was causing open interiors to bog my stuff down. It was an essential mod for me when first modding this game but i found other ways to open doors with spooner so i got rid of OI and easily gained more than 20fps on average
