Regarding Rockstar's updated modding policy.

  • Does anyone know how gta5-mods will be affected by the new policy that Rockstar published?

Specifically about the part that relates to real world branding, such as vehicles and clothing. A lot of vehicles on gta5-mods is real world branded, so I'm curious about the reaction modders will take considering servers are not allowed to use them on FiveM anymore. I'm curious if modders will remove branding from the vehicles but keep the same models, etc.

  • @Xejn

We have to make the distinction between SP and Online/RP.

In the SP Universe they can only protect their own IP. If someone uploads a Coke or Pepsi t-shirt here it will be up to those companies, not R*, not T2I, to make a DMCA claim.

With respect to FiveM and company, will be interesting to see how it plays out.

If they ever tried to enforce bullshit on SP, the workaround would be Steam emulators or cracked games - this would of course alienate their fan base so I don't see them going there.

Obviously FiveM has gone whore and makes money on monetized mods (Tebex etc). If they go out of business what will be the impact on local host servers? I personally could care less about their RP servers.

Overall I don't expect any dramatic changes, but we'll have to wait and see.

  • @Xejn said in Regarding Rockstar's updated modding policy.:

considering servers are not allowed to use them on FiveM anymore

    That's your interpretation.

"importation or misuse of other IP in the project, including other Rockstar IP, real-world brands, characters, trademarks or music;"

This is legally vague and subject to interpretation. What is clear to me at least, is that they will not allow Liberty City, as an example, to be used in RP servers. That is consistent with the DMCA takedown claims they've done for SP.

I know Ferrari makes $$$$$ licensing its brand but will they go after the modding community? If they do, R* will have to comply. I'm assuming FiveM will not have the resources to pay that kind of license fee and ofc FiveM doesn't run its own RP servers AFAIK. Having said that, did any real brands threaten this community given those mods have been out there for years?

So how the hell would you police a stupid policy on the 100s or 1000s of user maintained RP servers out there? Have a bot that identifies an F355 or a Dino or a Roma based on the prancing horse badge - server by server?

Misuse is another story. That is defendable. But removing real world brands? Come on.

    Should be interesting.

@JohnFromGWN try finding Louis Vuitton on 5Mods ;) other than that, I agree

  • @ReNNie Meh, I couldn't expect a logical thing from those cold blooded animal murderers anyway...

But I don't think even they would go on a real DMCA takedowns anyway. All LV mods removed from here are still available at gta5mod.net . If they were too serious about it, they would do this globally, not gta5mods.com targetted.

    Just a personal opinion of mine, if the staff of this site wouldn't care and wouldn't remove those mods, I highly doubt they would sue the owner anyway. But since the owner is a "Yes Man";

    "Yes Man"

when it comes to those request, he just removed them to avoid any legal trouble.

Not sure from the FiveM wise though. Seems like they are a whole different community than gta 5 community.

But if a company is stupid enough to target free mods, than what can I say... Steven Ogg became this much popular is because of gta5, not because of The Walking Dead. To me, gta 5 is a perfect place for brands to advertise their brands without even lifting a finger or paying a penny.

  • @ReNNie said in Regarding Rockstar's updated modding policy.:

No. I meant searching for specific brands on the thousands of RP servers out there.

  • I am going to scream of fucking joy if this means FiveM ceases to exist.

Fuck FiveM and especially fuck CFX.

  • @Rstein FiveM sucks anyway :D Tell anything bad, and they say "you are creating a discrimination of our beloved community". Dude, you are the ones creating a different community apart from the real gta community what the heck

and that role playing never makes sense to me either. You like being a cop, go apply to Police Academy, can maybe even meet with Mahone there too :D Enjoy serving food, send your resume to restraurants

How shitty feeling that they even make love in there, make weddings and they all fake, probably those roleplay as wifey and hubby doesn't even know their real names, yet they are feeling "ohh dear, you can never possibly know how hardly my heart is pounding for yoouuuuuu aaallll the way to the oblivion eternitiiyyyy 必 必 必 必 ". and what's more creepy is, some are justifying this so called love and saying "Oh but you know what, we have met in real life too and became lovers.", but yet they are so disconnected from the reality, they don't even know what real is and so they keep looping in that same utopic universe

  • @Aurora11 Exactly the reason I treated RP servers as glorified freeroam servers in my time of playing FiveM. It's autistic as hell (even more so than yours truly who wrote an entire story for his Ingot lol) and gets cancerous real quick.

  • @Rstein @Aurora11

Interesting. If it wasn't for FiveM I wouldn't be modding GTA V anymore.

However I've never been on an RP server and never will unless I host it myself privately for a few friends (very unlikely).

Instead I use FiveM free roam/open world/sandbox because the MLOs in SP are a joke compared to FiveM.

And all scripts in FiveM (well almost all) are in text, so wonderfully easy to modify and customize.

Finally, I can load FiveM with assets in roughly 10% the time it takes me load my SP - which is also great for testing new mods or scripts.

I have 3 local host FiveM servers. One is QB Core which is cool because it has a MySQL Database.

I had hit a wall with regards to SP modding and scripting. Now I'm learning lua and tons of other things to keep from being bored to death by SP alone.

So for me, it's not SP Vs FiveM, it's definitely SP + FiveM.

If FiveM dies, I hope someone will find a way to crack the authentication bullshit which prevents offline play - and yes, my SP is 100% legally purchased on Steam.

  • @JohnFromGWN What's me and @Rstein is saying isn't actually FiveM itself, but how people are using it. Like some stuff are easier and offer more features to do, like that streaming a video you were posted. and how easy it is.

but what we are talking about is how people are using FiveM to create their own utopia and acting like they are rich multi billionaries with 50 luxury cars in the fake garage of their fake 50 million dollars mansions, or saying "I love you" to a girl and proposing to marry, to a girl who have never actually met, never saw face, not even know the first letter of name...

I'm also hating we can't play SP offline as well. Mine is also legal purchase, which was cheap anyway with that huge discount. So one day I had to move to another place for a while and there wasn't internet there and I couldn't able to play the game... Also that shitty updates too. I want to check out the Cayo Perico a bit, I have the original game I don't wanna watch it in people's streams, but nope. I don't have a choice to do so.

Because, if I remove gta launcher bypass mod, game will download shit tons of useless crap. and even more so, the launcher bypass mods no longer will work and I will have to update the game every time an update comes up, then wait for the scripthook gets updated which one day may never be and cripples the modding, and even if I can rollback to an old version and manage to play without updating until the next update comes, then it's a tedious thing and had to be done after every update as well...

Plus I have so many modified files in update.rpf , it would be very difficult for me to properly replace the old modified ones with the updated update.rpf too ..

So yeah as a local host, FiveM is great. Hell, if there was proper missions, it would be nicey to play them as coop too with real friends. Like Ghost Recon Wildlands. Damn that's a super amazing game with your nice friends, not perfect, but very good. ( Decide who lives, and who dies -- Target has been killed. Mission failed!  ). As a like those creepy weirdo Lesterish type of play, it reminds me how some people playing Skyrim just to satisfy their sexual needs with 5000 sex mods

  • @Aurora11 said in Regarding Rockstar's updated modding policy.:

I'm also hating we can't play SP offline as well.

Are you referring to SP offline or FiveM in SP mode?

Based on what I know, it is impossible to play FiveM offline because of the authentication process. There is a lan mode, and lots of presumed workarounds such as removing adhesive from components.json or putting sv_lan 1 in server.config, but I think that's just a crock. I stopped looking.

As for SP offline? That's my default. My GTA5.exe isn't allowed to go online, so I'm offline 100% of the time. No mod, no bypass launcher, just not allowing GTA5.exe access to the internet. I did this not because of outages or unavailability, I did this to stop the GTAO ads which made me puke.

  • @Aurora11 said in Regarding Rockstar's updated modding policy.:

saying "I love you" to a girl and proposing to marry,

Actually, that happened to me. I met what I thought was the love of my life on an RP server. We dated virtually for months and finally agreed to meet in rl.

You can imagine how shocked I was when "she" turned out to be a 70 year old male Hell's Angel. He stole my money and my car and threatened to kill my cat if I reported him to the police. My heart was broken.

That's when I stopped doing RP.

  • @JohnFromGWN I meant SP offline. When I launch my game without internet, it says verifying game ownership failed error and that social club thing comes down from top saying "You are not connected to the internet" and the only button there is Quit Game.

Me also hates those annoying ads too. I'm using Christmas Loading Screens and I hate how those shitty ads covering the pictures.

I don't know why FiveM can't be played offline though. The only thing I can think of is, if the take two would decide to shut down fivem, so then people can't be able to play FiveM. and having such power and availabilty may also make taketwo happy as well. but other than that, there can't be any logical reasons, at least not something I can think of.

  • @Aurora11 I was thinking more if FiveM goes out of business for any reason. The only role they play (for local servers), and I don't need or want it, is to authenticate my setup.

Ideally I'd just have my server and their client (no need to update) and I wouldn't need their permission to play my own game on my locally hosted server.

Small annoyance, but I also hate that they force their stupid watermark and stupid icon on the screen. If you do a video on FiveM you would need to resize the video to remove that shit. Ofc you can pay monthly for the privilege of having it removed, or to have your own crap displayed.

Thank god with Steam, and I"m not a fan of Steam at all, I don't need to put up with that forced online shit or update nags. I revert, I go offline. And I don't need to allow GTA5.exe to access the internet when it forces an update.

  • @JohnFromGWN Truely sorry and very heartbroken for you   I can't even imagine how that would feel :(

but yeah, roleplaying always sucks. It alienates people even more. Many... well don't know how to pronounce this exactly but let's just say individuals wants to divide and seperate people. They have many reasons for it and it sure as well makes their jobs much easier ..

So roleplaying just adds more fire to the ember, people forgetting how it really feels to kiss the eyes of a girl, how it really feels to hug your loved man... Of course in real life people can fake their feelings, twist their words too, but at least what you two live can be real. Other one, it's just an illusion from the very beginning... :( :broken_heart:

  • @JohnFromGWN Oh yup, that watermark too. Such a shitty actually they are asking money for it to be removed..... They are already getting paid for many things, even when people just plays their modified version of gta and they are this much low to ask to be paid constantly for it to be removed...

That's nothing but stealing. If they would have actually created a proper content and ask payment for it I would understand, but asking only for a watermark is only what thieves does ..

  • @Aurora11 I have no interest in online gaming other than coop shooters and even then you have so many cheaters and griefers and trolls.

I think being on a FiveM server with friends would be fun, especially during a long cold winter when you're confined indoors. But I don't mean to RP, I mean more to explore the open world, maybe do a heist, race, etc. But I wouldn't want to get married in RP and have little babies that look like the Blue Hulk.

  • @JohnFromGWN Yup exactly <3 Playing missions together with real friends is absolutely fun. Talking on voice chat and laughing together on funny things, cursing together to shitty glitches :D GTA Online's heists are very fun with friends too, not the Doomsday Heist though since the enemy is ridiculous in it and the missions are just like go here, kill those, take that and drive back to base.

But the first heists that came are very fun to play together <3 The missions have an actual story, enemy is mostly well balanced, things you need to do is different and quite interesting :sparkles:

Of course exploring the world in gta with friends together would be very very fun too. But unfortunately the map is super small and gets boring very easily :( San Andreas would be amazing though <3 <3 I always loved those small towns on the country side where you can explore, see what's around and all :sparkles: :dolphin: :pineapple:

  • @Aurora11 You could race around San Andreas and don't forget there is also Liberty City for FiveM which is a good size map. There are also some huge maps but you would need those to be hosted, they would kill a regular PC.

  • @JohnFromGWN Problem though there isn't anything in the map :( I mean no peds, no cars, nothing.. Some people creating traffic nodes for a few popular maps, well it brings some nice view obviously but I guess it's more difficult to add ped nodes around the map :(

So you just being like a lone wanderer, but with some awesome friends

Partially true. They will vigorously go after Libery City mods; but they are legally also required to state their gaming platform can't be used to violate the IP rights of others. Like you say, though, in practice, they really only care about their own IP, of course.

Misuse is another story. That is defendable. But removing real world brands? Come on.

You better believe it. :) Like Ren said, try finding Louis Vuitton on 5Mods. :100:

If they ever tried to enforce bullshit on SP, the workaround would be Steam emulators or cracked games - this would of course alienate their fan base so I don't see them going there.

Nobody can practically prevent a SP player from having a Louis Vuitton item in their game. (Or Liberty City, even) But the official Louis Vuitton Malletier company can, and actively does, send legal notices to 5mods to have mods with their brand removed. As Dr. Evil told Nr. 2: "That, too, already has happened." So, they can certainly go after the sites that distribute their brands -- thus making it harder for ppl to get access to these type of mods. So, it's not about "police a stupid policy on the 100s or 1000s of user maintained RP servers," but simply about cutting off the source(s) to these materials.

  • @meimeiriver This is a very complex issue, copyright laws, licensing, fair use etc. Just think of all the mods that are "borrowed" from R* competitors and other game developers such as Forza, Asseto Corsa, NFS, just to mention a few for the vehicles. For the peds it's a completely different story - they've been taken from every game imaginable. Even maps and assets from Mafia DE etc.

Hell, if R* or T2 wanted to be complete aholes, they could go one step further on the LC DMCA and request, of this site, to take down any mod associated with Liberty City for example the traffic paths and colored maps - whether they would have the legal right or not is academic because they have the legal and financial resources to sue this website into submission.

Overall, it can definitely can get crazy and litigious but thankfully it hasn't and I don't think it will except for those who try to make money off those assets. I'll use the example once more of Ferrari which has a formidable brand. For sure they would sue any gaming company using their cars without a license, but would they go after some 15 year old on his Patreon site? No way.

My 2 cents once more is that nothing more will come of this. They might tighten the screws with GTA6, who knows, but FiveM and RP is their real competition - or is it? Personally I feel modding and RP are like millions of dollars of free advertising for the franchise, well not that they really need it.

  • @meimeiriver said in Regarding Rockstar's updated modding policy.:

I had no idea they would stoop so low. I would comply and then send them a link to a site that sells fake Vuitton merchandise with an enjoy this site and GFY.

I have frankly no idea why they bother. Who cares whether a game exists with fake clothes in it, using their brand? It's free advertising, if anything. Lawyers tend to think more rigid, though. :)
