Happy New Year! Next features to implement?

  • @ImNotMentaL
I told that because we've (rappo and other moderators) been over this a million times already. This is not the first time we faced the "university spam".

So far rappo has added reCAPTCHA to the registration page, so it proves these aren't bots, they're human spammers. There's no way to block them or identify them as spammers before they post, they use new e-mails and new usernames every time.

Spamming happens in every forum. And forums sites have a group of users called moderators to take care of problems like this.
Almost everyday at least one of those spam posts appear in this forum and in many popular sites, like Microsoft, Final Fantasy and Activision. And everyday we delete them as soon as we see them.

    TL;DR
We're here to take care of such problems. You don't have to worry. You cannot remove spamming by it's "roots" like you said. But everyone can help in reducing it, you can flag such posts, or anything against rules.

  • TRANSLATOR

@Akila_Reigns maybe you can ask @Rappo to set a function to block certain keywords like "university", "qq", etc that needs admin approval

  • @ImNotMentaL Of course that will slow them down, but it won't stop spamming. I just banned a guy who posted only god knows what - with topics named /오피쓰-opss1닷컴-건대오피-강남오피-강남건마-수원오피. It's not a "university" spam, but something else.

Like I said, stuff like this happens all the time, and this forum has a great moderator team. @FoxtrotDelta is from China, so I don't think those posts would stay for long, the chances are pretty low . We have almost 24/7 moderator coverage.

We discussed about this before when this first started. We can implement options like Flood Control, but it'll reduce the user experience. Fell free to suggest anything that might do good for the forum. If rappo agrees to them, I won't argue. But personally I don't think rappo should take that much responsibilities, that's what we're for.
This spamming thing is no biggie. We remove them as soon as they pop up and ban them for good.

  • @Akila_Reigns it's not a big problem . We have got it covered.

  • @FoxtrotDelta I think that should be directed to ImNotMentaL. ;)

  • Something else I would really appreciate, on top of whats already been mentioned.. As a mod author, I would like to be notified of all comments that are left on my mods, regardless of whether I was tagged or not. More often than not people don't use the tags, so it would be nice to just get notifications regardless :D

  • @CamxxCore awesome. me too!.

  • Implementation of the GitHub flavoured markdown package that supports full language colour coding would be nice... I'd love to get rid of those black boxes round the code segments I post.

You can use ```c# but it doesn't get you traditional C# code colouring.

  • @rappo you should put for PCs only on the main page at the top so we stop getting stupid console questions on mod pages or on the forums.

  • @Rjvisser01 well the problem is alot of them dont take the time to read stuff so if you put for PCs only at the top of the main page then for sure they will see that.

  • @CamxxCore I agree with CamxxCore's suggestion, Just to add to it, a suggestion from me, how about voting the comments up and down on the Mod's page as well(Similarly what we have at this moment on Forums).
By this way, if some user's suggestion is helpful to others, they can vote it up and that way, most helpful comment/review, will be on top of the comments, and the negative/abusive comments will be on lower side.

  • @Rjvisser01 If an English speaking person goes to a Chinese language site, to find technical help on something, I can pretty much guarantee that all they will do, is fumble through the registration process, find what looks like the relevant section and then paste in a Google translated version of their problem.

Sometimes, it's not so much about knowing how to read, it's about knowing how to read a language you don't understand. You have to remember, only the main page of this site is multi-lingual... everything else is only in English, unless the author of a topic chooses to use their native language.

Something on the main page could be made to fit the language that version of the site uses, that page that you think is easy to find, is probably impossible if you don't speak English.

Perhaps something prominent when you go through the registration process, before you even get to the point of posting would help. A simple multi-lingual message, in every language that this site uses, that says "This site is for PC modding only, console modding is not allowed to be discussed on the site.". Or you could even add a "What platform do you play GTAV on?" type question, that could respond with a similar prompt if the platform is not specified as PC.

  • @Frazzlee I think rappo would still want to screen those files. Nothing is stopping someone from releasing a few updates and then planting something malicious. Maybe an automatic screening process. Maybe there is an api somewhere to auto-scan files?

  • As for the concern about console modding - I set up something on NodeBB called a "welcome notification":

Welcome to the GTA5-Mods.com Community Forums! Please be sure to read the FAQ before posting, and note that this discussion board is for singleplayer PC mods only.

And it provides a link to the FAQ. I have no idea what this looks like or where it shows up, so if any new users get it, can you please show me? :p

  • @rappo Just made a new account to show you how it looks like
    alt text

  • @Rjvisser01 it stays there in your notifications. its the first notification you receive just like normal notifications.

  • @FoxtrotDelta hah, thanks! When you click it does it go to the FAQ?

  • @rappo yes it does. its just like any other notification.

    Nice work. :thumbsup_tone1:

  • @rappo How about adding an answered feature as well? See, a lot of times in many sections, people post new topic as their questions or the difficulty they are facing, especially in modding discussion section.

So, how about giving an option to the orignal author of that topic to select any given replies as answer and green tick mark next to profile picture? Something like Stackoverflow has? By this way, it would be easier for people to know which questions are still opened and which are already answered.

Also, useful for people who face similar type of hurdle, rather than scrolling from page to page, they will have their answer right upfront. Just a suggestion. (:

yeah, as mentioned in my orignal suggestion, just like stackoverflow. (:

Gotta say, I hate sites that have this kind of feature, especially SO, it's almost as bad as Microsoft (but not quite). If you spend a lot of time on there, you'll see that answers get marked and upvoted that are either completely rubbish, or in some cases, completely miss the point of the question.

I was on one the other day that has something like 400+ votes and it didn't even answer the question... so in my personal opinion, it can lead to misleading information being pushed to the top of the pile. It also works negatively in the case of new information that is added, that might correct those answers, as that new information won't get promoted to the justified position. People lose interest in a question, so they don't bother to re-check new answers.

I know some sites like them but I often find much better information, in those comments that aren't at the top of the list. That's even more the case on Microsoft sites, where they're too busy trying to earn brownie points by marking their own responses as answers, even when it's their generic copy & paste rubbish. :D

But I am just one voice in many.

  • @LeeC2202 Could be, but as they say, every coin has 2 sides, so will every suggestion. Besides, it was just simple suggestion, doesn't has to be implemented. :D :P

  • @CamxxCore I need this too. I've missed important comes before because I didn't get notified, no @ mention on the post.

@LeeC2202 I've changed the code box theme to use GitHub's coloring (I think - check it out and let me know). Also the proper language code for C# would be csharp
