What does the watching of categories do?

When you watch a category there's a notification that says, "You are now watching updates from this category and all subcategories." Does this mean I get updates (notifications?) to my watched topics within the category, or any topics within the category? I'm not getting notifications for "any topics within the category", so I assume it's the former?

Honestly, no idea. Apparently I'm watching some categories too but I'm not getting notifications about new topics there.

@rappo Haha, my guess is that it overrides watched topics within the category, but I have yet to test it out.
Edit: Tested it. It does not do what I guessed. I still have no idea what it does.
