Use patreon in the mods is OK
-
Friends of mine, fellow modders, greetings from the Mexican republic, I am here to end the discussion that has divided our beautiful community.
Why is it okay to have mods on patreon?
This can be easily explained, some "people" try to solve these differences by insulting content creators who put their best efforts to give us the best of the best, calling us (and I quote) "massive fucking scumbag".
Porting the 3D models and accommodating them to the game is an arduous procedure and is not easy, these people excuse themselves that we can not use models protected by copyright and constantly threaten without any result.
They cover saying that for that is the button to donate to PayPal, but then if nobody donates, what the hell is that button there?
Finally and to conclude my brief speech, I would like to be a moderator of the page so that these people learn of language and to be understood civilly without needing to insult and divide the beautiful community of modders.

For starters, people do not "excuse themselves that we can not use models protected by copyright." Rather, it's a simple reality: you do NOT own the right to distribute copyrighted material. Period. No ifs, no buts. And I don't care how difficult it was for you to import 3D models from other games and such.
In general, companies, like Rockstar, turn a blind eye to any not-for-profit use of their material. Things get different, of course, when you start to make money off their work. Then you effectively endanger the entire community, as their company lawyers may then, one day, decide to put a stop to it, once and for all.
In short: don't abuse the lenience of copyright holders by exploiting their work for profit.

And making them from scratch is even harder... Writing script mods is just as hard but that wouldn't be an excuse if someone was taking someone else's scripts, making a few changes and then taking money for it as their own work.
And have you noticed how these people say "Don't upload these mods without my permission"? They can take someone else's work and upload it without permission (and ask for donations) but you can't do the same to theirs? There's a word for that...
Let's put it this way, I am a game developer, so how do you think I would feel if I came on here and saw my models being used to earn money by someone else? If I released something on a "Personal use license" (do you know what that is?) and saw someone making profit from it, how do you think I would feel?
I don't believe anyone who has such disregard for copyright and the rights of the original creators, is worthy of moderating anything in this regard... nor do they have the right to claim that they are here to "end the discussion".
If your sense of respect stops at the boundaries of the modding community, then you have much to learn.

I have recieved quite a few donations via paypal. Sure, not anywhere near a real paycheck, but that's not what I am doing this for. I would like people to support me where they can, but I don't want to exclude people from using my mods just because they don't want to or can't pay money for mods. Also, it's not just one fee. Imagine you want to use the mods of 3 people who use patreon exclusivity for 5$ a month (just an example). That means paying 15$ for user generated mods a month. That's crazy!
And the copyright debate... Well, it just is a strong point that you can't just simply ignore. What most people do is simply take model from game/author A and convert it to game B. That's not really much effort, ESPECIALLY when talking about ped models. (I'm not saying it's so easy peasy anyone can do it, but when I compare with scratch modelling your own model, write a script from ground up and stuff like that... well yea). Plus, most models are converted without permission. While it might be in a grey area, basically selling them (and that's what it is when you are forced to pay for Patreon) moves it way more to the illegal side. If you think you deserve more money for what you're doing, then
a) stop
or
b) start working for a game companyThe whole spirit of user modding is to enjoy what you're doing and share your work with others, not in hope to generate cash out of it.
Edit: Just to shove this in: I have absolutely nothing against voluntary donations. If people would like to show their support, who am I to stop them? It's an option and I am glad that people use this option when they really enjoy something. It also gives the donation more meaning... Or something along those lines. I just can't defend using models from other companies/authors and charge people for downloading them. It has a very bitter taste. Just imagine every half-decent modder would do it. Modding would die out rather quickly with only a few white knights remaining. Or something like that. Because people think: If XYZ does it, why can't I?!
