@ocfinest26 Have a read through this, take your time and go through things slowly.
[Tutorial] Grand Theft Auto V Modding - A Few Things You Should Know
If you have more questions after reading that, ask away, there will always be someone to help.
-
I play the game through steam? does that matter?
-
@ocfinest26 No, the game folders are exactly the same, so mods work on both versions in the same way. The only difference you might see are the locations of the game folders.
I have the Retail version, so mine is Program Files\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V
Yours is probably something like Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Rockstar Games\Grand Theft Auto V
Everything is based on the Grand Theft Auto V part though, so it will be fine.
-
One other thing I would just add here though, you might see some threads that say you can mod the normal game files if you use the Steam version.
Don't be tempted to do that, always use a mods folder and if things go wrong, the original files are the backups.
-
@ocfinest26 One more thing, in your first post you said "play gta5 online with mods".
These mods can be used for offline/SP only. You will get banned if you try to mod online.
Moreover, the base of most mods, Script Hook V, closes the game intentionally when connecting to online. Don't worry though, I've explained the basics in the tutorial LeeC2202 said.
-
@V4D3R Well spotted... I can't believe I missed that, thank you.
-
@LeeC2202 NP, glad to see you have everything under control when Foxtrot and I aren't around.
Thanks.
-
@LeeC2202 currently I'm at this step
Example using the Steam version:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Grand Theft Auto V - modded
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Grand Theft Auto V - online
When you play either online or SP, rename the correct copy back to Grand Theft Auto V.
-
@ocfinest26 Excellent, multiple folders is the best way to handle having mods and playing safe online... I can see you're going to get to grips with this quickly.
-
@LeeC2202 how do you play with others who have mods. for example multi vigilante mode?
-
@ocfinest26 I don't play with others, so I can't answer that one I'm afraid. I play 100% offline.
-
@LeeC2202 got it. so can I do mission of that nature offline?
-
@ocfinest26 I don't even know what that mission is... what does it let you do?
-
@LeeC2202 do I install the script hooks to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Grand Theft Auto V - modded
-
@ocfinest26 Yep, that's it.
-
@LeeC2202 what do I do here?
Script Hook V
Copy ScriptHookV.dll from the downloaded file to the game's root folder, where GTA5.exe is located.
Copy dinput8.dll In order to load ASI plugins.
-
@ocfinest26 Both of those go in your modded version, directly into the Grand Theft Auto V - modded folder.
-
@LeeC2202 a little help here
Copy the ASI file into your game directory.
Create a folder named "scripts" in your game directory.
-
@ocfinest26 Okay, in your Grand Theft Auto V - modded folder, create a folder called scripts. That is where any mods will go that use ScriptHookVDotNet.
The ASI file goes into the Grand Theft Auto V - modded folder directly. That is where any mods that use ScriptHookV go.
-
can I download mods after I do that?
-
@ocfinest26 Have you installed OpenIV? If so, then you should be good to go. I'm not sure if you have to have your modded version named as just Grand Theft Auto V for OpenIV to work when you first install it. Try it named as Grand Theft Auto V - modded first, it might work fine.
-
@LeeC2202 I'm trying to install a trainer but its only
internet file
-
@ocfinest26 Is it a .rar, .7z or .zip file? If so, have you got something like 7-Zip or WinRar installed on your PC?
All of the mods on here will be in an archive of some kind. 7-zip is free and you can get it from here 7-Zip
Use that to open the archives and the mod files should be inside, usually along with any instructions needed to install them.
Edit: I'm going offline now, it's 5:25am here and my brain wants to stop working. Keep asking the questions though, with this being a global site, there is always someone around to help.

@LeeC2202 thanks
