What are texture files ending with "_sm"?

For example: x64i.rpf levels gta5 _citye downtown_01 dt1_08.rpf, in the dt_08_ground2+hidr.ytd there is a texture named prop_gravel_02_sm file. What is it's function, and how to recreate when I am making new textures?

Looks like a specular map perhaps, which would tie in with the the _sm in the name.
