"mods" folder noob questions

  • I freaking love modding and I'm slowly digging deeper into modding and trying to understand it better and how things work rather then just copy and pasting what a video tells me to do. My question is about the mods folder, a lot of the tutorials just explain how to add things and where to put them but they don't tell you what its for or why.

    1. Should the mods folder contain all original files of the game that way you can edit them with each mod without screwing up the original files?

    2. Do all instructions for each mod refer to the mods folder? meaning something like the example below should be in the mods folder or should it be in the main directory?

EXAMPLE: World of Variety - does the below example go into mods section or main directory?

    VEHICLES
Find and replace the vehicles.meta in Grand Theft Auto V\update\update.rpf\common\data\levels\gta5\ with the one included in the zip.

I'm sure these are very basic and stupid questions to some, but like i said I'm a noob that's getting better, I'm trying to get as much info as possible to expand my modding knowledge, any help is much appreciated and thank you :)

Not all files have to be in the mods folder. Just the archives in which you change the content.

So yes, update.rpf is in there. My add-on packs for cars and peds. And something like x64e that holds some cars or textures that are replaced

  • @ReNNie thanks so much for that

@yayos np, if you have more questions regarding your modding, just ask them in this thread and we'll try to help you out :)

  • @ReNNie thanks so much for the help its made my modding confidence get better knowing these little specific questions that run through my mind, just a couple more for you :P, i haven't had any memory crashes but I've heard about them.

is there a specific number of mods in total you can have before those crashes happen?

do all mods effect the memory crash or does it only apply to specific types of mods?

will getting more RAM for my computer fix memory crashes or is it a different kind of memory?

and last question, is it possible to stack liveries for the same vehicle? i have two different liveries that ask to replace the same files but i want both, is there a way around that?

Let's get things straight right away. I'm not your answer-genie ;)
Read around on the forum. Open threads about add-on cars, memory errors etc and you'll learn.
If you then have investigated something and have a specific question, do post :)

AFAIK not. As soon as you start on the path of a custom gameconfig.xml you can expect it

do all mods effect the memory crash or does it only apply to specific types of mods?

Most scripts and texture mods no. But adding cars, peds etc yes

will getting more RAM for my computer fix memory crashes or is it a different kind of memory?

Nope. Its a limitation within the game-engine

If it's a _sign_1 then you can rename it to _2 and import in OpenIV using DXT5 and MipMaps set to auto.
Or car_sign_6 then rename to 7. The numbers have to be consecutive.

  • @ReNNie hahah those were the last ones i promise, thanks so much for all the answers really appreciate it :)
