Xbox 360 - controller no longer working in GTA 5

This issue is extremely frustrating. I played GTA 5 for months pc with my controller without any issues, however in the past few months it refuses to work. When connected it doesn't register anything besides moving the camera. I've tried re-installing my game, reconnecting the controller, but so far nothing has working. If anyone knows of a solution to this, any help would be much appreciated.
